Deuteronomy 1:34-46

Hey, welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're at Deuteronomy chapter 19, or no, Deuteronomy chapter 1, Deuteronomy chapter 1, verses 34 through 46. Deuteronomy chapter 1, verses 34 through 46. We're going to look at what happens with the Israelites as they are about to be punished by God for refusing to enter the promised land. Let's have some coffee.
We'll pray and get into God's word. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. What a joy and a blessing it is to get to read your word. Lord, we pray that you would please help us. We need your help. We need your spirit to teach us. Where we have hard hearts ourselves, we pray that you would soften us. Where we have deaf ears, we pray that you would make us hear. In Jesus's name, amen. All right, so we're at Deuteronomy chapter one, verses 34 through 46. Here we go.
And the Lord heard the sound of your words and was angry and took an oath, saying, Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land of which I swore to give to your fathers. Except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, he shall see it. And to him and his children I am giving the land which he walked, because he wholly followed Jehovah. The LORD was also angry with me for your sakes, saying, Even you shall not go in there.
Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. Moreover, your little ones and your children, who you say will be victims, who today have no knowledge of good and evil, they shall go in there. To them I will give it, and they shall possess it.
But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea." Then you answered and said to me, "'We have sinned against Jehovah. We will go up and fight just as Jehovah our God commands us. And when every one of you had girded his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the mountain.
And the Lord said to me, tell them, do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you, lest you be defeated by your enemies. So I spoke to you, yet you would not listen. but rebelled against the command of the Lord, and presumptuously went up into the mountain. And the Amorites who dwelt in that mountain came out against you and chased you as bees do, and drove you back from Seir to Hormah. Then you returned and wept before Jehovah, but the Lord would not listen to your voice. or give ear to you. So you remained in Kadesh many days according to the days that you spent there."
Well, we need to ask ourselves our three questions. A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do? A, what's this about? Well, remember these are the words of Moses, right? This is the Moses explaining to them the law and we're still in the historical preamble part, right? He's he's telling them here's right. We came out of Egypt.
Here's what happened we left and we went to Kadesh Barnea and yesterday Daniel and I we talked about how our last time we talked about how the Spies went in and they wouldn't go and they disbelieved the Lord. But now we come to what the judgment for that type of disbelief is. And the judgment is that, surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land on which I swore to give your fathers. God's telling them, no, you're not going to go into that.
This whole generation, you're going back to the wilderness, back to the way of the Red Sea. It grieves the people about this because they want the benefits They're lacking the faith. And they try to take it into their own hands, right? They even gird up their belts and they want to go to war. And God tells Moses, tell them, don't do it. I'm not going to go with them. They still do it. And they lose and they're discouraged and the Lord says I told you so it was presumptuous of him That's what's going on here. Moses is reminding them of this story of what's happened in the past.
What's the best verse to summarize us? Well, I think verse 35 is one of the verses I have underlined, but you might also underline that where they went into the Red Sea maybe, maybe verse 40. Maybe you would underline something else. You can shoot me a message and let me know that. But last, seek calling. What are we called to do? Well, I want to essentially move this towards allegory for a moment, okay? This is not the normal way in which I go to calling, but I think it's helpful, right?
When we refuse to do things by faith, and instead presumptuously try to do them by our own works, right? When we refuse to go in the Lord's way, but then we decide we're going to take hold of heaven by ourselves, We reject the way in which the Lord has commanded us to receive him, to receive the blessings that come from him.
It's only by faith. It's by faith that we follow after him. Now that faith isn't without works, right? Faith without works is dead, but it's from a heart that believes God, believes his goodness, believes his covenant promises, and seizes upon those promises by faith that we get the good inheritance because it's been purchased by Jesus Christ.
But if we try to go the way of legalism, where we don't actually believe that God is good, we don't actually believe that God is going to keep us and care for us and accomplish His promises, but we have to do it ourselves, we're like those men who girded up their swords and tried to take the mountain of the Amorites by their own means. We can't do it. We must follow in the ways of the Lord by faith.
And specifically, the way in which the Lord has shown us that we walk in him and walk by his spirit is by faith in his son, Jesus Christ. We can't get His favor without His Son. We don't get into the kingdom except through the Son. There's no way to enter into the Father's graces except through the Son.
It is only through Jesus Christ and faith in Him that we receive the promise, the promise of life everlasting. So don't try to take the kingdom by your own will or your own works. but rest in Jesus Christ, and your good works will flow from that faith.
Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith. the only way we have to be right with you. Lord, we pray that you would give us strength today. Give us hope, Lord. Let us walk in your ways. In Jesus' name, amen. Well, may the Lord bless you and strengthen you. May you walk in the ways of Jesus Christ by faith, and may you bring your Father in heaven glory, for his face shines upon those who love him. We'll see you next time. Bye.
