Jeremiah 26

Hey, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning We're gonna find out what old Jerry has for us in Jeremiah chapter 26 So Jeremiah 26, let's have some coffee. We'll pray we'll get into God's Word But hey, just wanted to say if you're here for clickbait, you're in the wrong place, right? This is a actual devotional whoo going through the scriptures And so no shortcuts, right? So let's have some coffee. We'll pray don't get into Jeremiah 26. I No, no coffee. Someday, bud. Someday.
All right, let's pray. Father, thank you so much for the blessing you have given us to spend time together now. We pray that you would please care for us, that we would be led by your Holy Spirit to understand your word. And Father that we would know how it applies to our lives and how we're to have hope because of it. In Jesus' name, Amen. All right, Jeremiah chapter 26. We'll just kind of go paragraph by paragraph. So read, talk, read, talk, read, talk, okay? In the beginning of the rain of... Doesn't your Hoya Kim? Hey, good job.
You're a good son of Josiah King of Judah this word came from the Lord saying that says the Lord standing in the court of the Lord's house and speak to all the cities of Judah which Come to worship in the Lord's house all the words that I commanded you to speak to them do not diminish a ward for diminished a word. Perhaps everyone will listen and turn from his evil way, that I may warrant concerning the calamity which I propose to bring on them, because of the evil of their doings. And you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord, if you will not listen to me, To walk in my law, which I have set before you, to heed the words of my servants, the prophets whom I sent to you, both rising and falling and sending them, but you have not heeded. Then I will make this house like Shiloh and will make this city a cause to all nations of the earth.
All right. So what's it saying? Which if you will not listen to me to walk in the end are you talking about, but you have not heated, but you're not really You've not listened before but I'm still going to give you chances, right? I think it's like oh Yeah, but this shows God's long-suffering, His patience, His kindness, His goodness.
He's still giving them an opportunity to listen in turn. The thing I always find is He always gives them an opportunity, but He always knows in the end they're never going to follow through with it. Yeah, but it's still a real opportunity. So He knows their hearts, but they're still making their real choice. Yep. I'll read 7 to 9.
So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of Jehovah. Now it happened when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all that Jehovah had commanded him to speak to all the people, that the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him, saying, You will surely die. Why have you prophesied in the name of Jehovah, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant? And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the house of Jehovah." So what did they do? They're super happy about him, right? What did they do? You don't want to believe that. Was that hey, we're not believing that oh, we're not believing. Yeah, so they like they arrest him, right?
They're gonna kill him. Are you gonna read the next paragraph? When the princes of Judah heard these things they came up from the king's house to the house of the Lord and sat down in the entry of the new gate of the Lord's house and the and the priests and the prophets spoke to the princes and And all the people say, this man deserves to die, for he has prophesied against the city, as you heard with your ears. Okay, so what happens in that part? He's taken to court, technically. Yeah, so the princes, right, so these are like the elders, the chief men of the city, right? They're going to go hear the case and say, bring in charges against him. Verse 12, then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and all the people saying, the Lord sent me to prophesy against this house. city with all the words that you have heard.
Now therefore, amend your ways and your doings and obey the voice of Jehovah your God. Then the Lord will relent concerning the doom that he has pronounced against you. As for me, here I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and proper to you. But know for certain that if you put me to death, you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, on this city, and on its inhabitants.
For truly, Jehovah has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing." And so what's Jeremiah got to say when they bring all these charges against him? He's like he basically says Lord has sent me, but you you can I I'm not saying there's going to be doing I'm saying if you do not tell there is going to be do and he said but as for me you can do with it, whatever the heck you want to do with me, but If you tell me you Shedding innocent innocent blood and you're basically gonna do myself again good All right, go ahead and keep reading So the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, this man does not deserve to die, for he spoke to us in the name of the Lord our God. Alright, so what are the elders judgment? Well, he's fine. Yeah.
Then certain of the elders of the land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people, saying, Micah of Morsetheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts, Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruin, and the mountains of the temple like the bear hills of the forest.
Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah over him put him to death? Did he not fear Jehovah and seek Jehovah's favor? And Jehovah relented concerning the doom which he had pronounced against them. But we are doing great and evil against ourselves." Alright, so not only do they say, I'm not guilty, but then some of the elders, what do they get up and do?
They remind them of what Hezekiah prophesied to them. Well, what Micah prophesied during the days of Hezekiah the king, yeah. What Hezekiah did and how they were saved. And they're saying, did Hezekiah put to death Micah for pronouncing doom against the city? Yeah, right. No, no. Hezekiah took it to heart, didn't he? And they're saying maybe we should too. Yeah. So it seems like even amongst the elders, there are some that are still faithful, still willing to listen. You want to read 20 through 24?
Now there was also a man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Uriah the son of Shemaiah, of Kodath-Jerim, who prophesied against the city and against the land, according to all the words of Jeremiah. And when Jehoiakim joy again the king with all his mighty men and all the princes Hard this war the king sought to put him to death, but when you I heard it He was afraid Roger you're right. You're hearted. He was afraid and fled and went to the to Egypt Then you're horny camp the king sent men to Egypt oh when al Nathan the son of Akbar and other men who went with him to Egypt. And they sought Uriah from Egypt and brought him to Jehoiakim, the king, who killed him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people. Nevertheless, the hand of Achim, the son of Shapham, was with Jeremiah, so they should not give him into the hand of the people to be put to death. Okay, alright, so there's another guy who's also prophesying, Uriah. So Yah is my light.
And why did they threaten him? Yes, so what's he do he flees and what do they do? They get him and what do they do? Do they put him to death yeah? But somehow Jeremiah still lives So Jeremiah's got a real reason to be afraid huh yeah, that's kind of like if It's kind of like when you have Two guys when It's like if you have two guys, and they both commit the same crime, and then one's put to death, and the other is somehow safe. That other guy probably starts wondering about stuff, like, how did I not die, and this guy did.
Yeah, yeah. All right, so you go out of here. Your mom says, what in the world did you go in there and talk to your dad about? What was that section about in Jeremiah you guys were studying? What were you going to tell her it was about? about it was about Jeremiah being threatened by the people and Being taken the car and being found innocent, okay Yeah, yeah, I was a but Uriah when you're is put to death you're right. Yeah, sorry Yeah Yeah, that's one of those interesting hmm That contrast between the two of them, both of them faithful, but Jeremiah submits himself and isn't killed. The other guy doesn't submit himself and is chased down, captured, and killed.
What do you think is the best verse to summarize this section? No, but there's a lot. I'm going to say 26, I mean, I'm going to say verse 1 to verse 24. Don't do that. I have verse 3 underlined in my Bible I also have verse 14 underlined So that's fine, maybe you would underline something different Nathan wants to underline the whole chapter so Yeah, but you're trying to focus in on what what what's the core meaning of this I And so in my mind it starts with Jeremiah's prophecy. The rest of it just kind of flows from there. So let's go ahead and talk about seek calling. What do we call it to do? That's a hard one.
I was just thinking about Jeremiah how he submitted to the law, but I was also thinking like In some places like oh, what what's the book? Oh? I forget it's like It's like faithful disobedience or something like that mm-hmm, and this thinking like I I think Jeremiah knew that there was still some—he knew that he was being reasonable, and he knew that this court system was fair, whereas Uriah just decided, nope, I'm not even going to—I'm not going to trust it at all. And it's kind of like, what is the best course of action?
Because for some people, if you submit, you will be killed. For other people, if you flee, you won't be killed. But then it can flip-flop between the two. So you have to decide which one. Yeah, I don't think either of them were necessarily wrong, right?
Urijah is trying to preserve protected life. He spoke faithfully, God told him to, and they were hell-bent on killing him. Jeremiah faithfully speaks God's word, though reluctantly. He struggles with this. Even at one point earlier he said, I'm not going to say this anymore, but then God's word becomes like a fire in his bones. And yet he's going to be put in prison and stuff like that later, but right now he's able to be safe. It seems like he's looking out for Jeremiah. You know who Jeremiah kind of reminds me of? Paul? Just a little bit, but... Preaching different messages, but still having to be faithful to God and still being punished for it. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, so praying that God gives us wisdom, that we're faithful in speaking the word no matter what, but then how do we deal with the fallout from that?
Reminds me of what Jesus said, if they've hated me, they will also hate you. The servant is not greater than his master. But he also then tells them, go therefore into Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. He's given us good news to go and tell other people. So, we got business to attend to. I mean, you already got to disappoint Christ. Yeah. Alright, are you ready to pray? Yep.
God, we pray that you would give us wisdom. We pray that you would give us steadfastness and commitment, that we would speak the truth when, Lord, it needs to happen. We pray that we would be faithful to you, and that even though we may be afraid in our hearts, that we would not be afraid of men. Lord, we pray that you would give us wisdom when that time comes, how we respond even to the persecution that may follow. We pray for those who are even being persecuted today, maybe even this hour, for their faith, for telling others of Jesus Christ. And Father, we pray that you would please be with them and give them safety, care for them, and even if they're thrown in prison, even if they might be facing death, Lord, we pray that you would encourage them. Let your Holy Spirit be with them. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. May the Lord bless you. May you walk in the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ, and we'll see you next time. Bye.
