Jeremiah 19

Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions. This morning we're at Jeremiah chapter 19 talking about the potter again. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. >> Don't drink all of it. >> What do you mean don't drink all of it? It's my coffee. Hey, hey, hey. Don't drink all of it. Let's pray. God, thank you for this day. Thank you for time together. Please help us to read your word. Please help us to love you, follow after you, and walk in your ways in Jesus's name. Amen. All right. Jeremiah chapter 19. We're going to go through our ABCs. A, what's this? >> B, what's the best verse? >> C, what are we called to do? >> All right. So, clarity is better than quickness. Okay. So, >> and then D, A, B, C, D, E. >> Yeah. So, when we do Bible study, would we do D. Are there any difficulties with it? E. Is there any thing that needs to be extended to with other scriptures? But we're just doing devotions today. So, ABC. All right. Eight. Thus says the Lord, go and get a potter's earth and flask and take some of the elders of the gospel or sorry take some of the elders of the people and some of the elders of the priests and go out to the valley of the son of Henam which is by the in entry of the potur gate and proclaim there the word that I tell you and sayar the word of the Lord O king of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem thus says the Lord. the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel. Behold, I will bring such a catastrophe on this place that whoever hears of it, his ears will tingle. All right. So, what's that first paragraph talking about? >> The law says to take um some of the um elders of the people, some of the elders of the priests. >> Mhm. >> Some of all the elders. >> Yeah. So take the elders and go out into the valley and he's going to tell them a bunch of good news. >> No, >> no, it's about destruction, catastrophe. Here we go at verse four. Right. Because they have forsaken me and made this an alien place. because they have burned incense in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known and have filled this place with the blood of the innocents. They have also built the high places of Baal to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into my mind. Therefore, behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, or the valley of Henam, but the valley of slaughter. And I will make void the council of Judah and the Jerusalem in this place. And I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of those who seek their lives. Their corpses I will give as meat for the birds of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. I will make this city desolate and a hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues. And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters. And everyone shall eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in their desperation with which their enemies and those who will seek their lives shall drive them to despair. Well, that's a happy paragraph. >> What's that? What did he say in that one? What was it about? >> They will eat each other. >> Why would they eat each other? >> Because then they'll be starving. >> Why would God make that happen? >> Because they um obeying other gods. >> Yeah. Even sacrificing their children. Imagine if when Nathan was born, if I was so um desperate for material blessings that I would go to the altar and I would burn Nathan in the fire. >> Yeah, that's what he's saying that they were doing. >> Everybody >> Well, I don't think every single person was doing this and every single child, but yeah, >> this is the first born. [Music] Well, so it says uh to burn their sons with fire for the burnt offerings to Baal. >> It just says their sons. >> All the sons. >> It just says their sons. I don't know. So, all right. Let's go ahead. >> Yeah. Or you >> do you think that? Yeah. Judah is so cute. Right. They're God's children, though. Right. You're you're not inherently mine. I've been entrusted with caring for you as your dad, but the Lord sees his covenant children as his. And so he says, "This is not good." All right, let's go ahead and keep moving. Verse 10. Verse 10 here. Then you shall break the flask in the sight of the men who go with you and say to them, "Thus says the Lord of hosts, even so I will break this people in this city as one breaks a potter's vessel which cannot be made whole again, and they shall bury them in toughet there till there is no place to bury. Thus I will do to this place, says the Lord, and to its inhabitants, and make this city like Toffet, and the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the king of Judah shall be defiled like the place of Toffet, because all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the hosts of heaven. I poured out drink offerings to other gods. Right? So, uh, he's takes a pot and what's he do with the pot? breaks it. >> And what's that supposed to be like? >> Like God breaking the nation. >> Yeah. Is it going to be able to be put back together? >> Maybe. Super. >> Nope. He says uh all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put the back together the pot again. But that's what he's trying to say. It's going to be he's going to destroy them. Yeah. >> A new one. >> Very super cool. Well, very last part, verse 14. Then Jeremiah came from Tophet where the Lord had sent him to prophesy. And he stood in the court of the Lord's house and said to all the people, "Thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I will bring on this city and on all the her towns all the doom that I have pronounced against it because they have stiffened their necks that they might not hear my words. Well, what was that last section about? >> They will be destroyed because they did not listen to cat's words. >> Okay. So, you go out and mom says, "Well, what did you learn in coffee and devotions?" What was that? What was that section about? >> People eating each other out. >> Do you think it's going to be cannibal land? >> Yeah. >> Why? Why would that happen though, Daniel? >> Because they sinned. >> Yeah. Okay. So sin leads to the punishments that he was bringing on them. >> Mhm. >> Yeah. Did you know that he told them that this was going to happen? All the way back in the book of Deuteronomy, he told them these are the curses of breaking his covenant. And now he's saying it's going to happen. Yeah. In the book of Lamentations, we see it actually did happen. Well, what would you say is the best verse to summarize this? Is there anything that you remember that you thought that you don't have to tell me the exact number for you? I know that sometimes that was hard, but what section do you think was the best? >> Because they because when he said because they have sinned. >> Okay. >> Okay. So you think verses verse 15, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I will bring on this city and on all her towns all the doom that I have pronounced against it because they have stiffened their necks that they might not hear my words. >> I agree. That's what I would do, too. Yeah. Um, what do you think is your calling? What are you called to do? You're called to action from this. not to obey other gods because it's a warning to us. >> Yeah, we can be warned, right? Don't worship or serve any other gods? Good. Yeah. Does God take that lightly? No. For the Lord your God is the jealous God, right? It's that God is severe in wanting his love. And so if we're if we've made promises to him and then we break those promises and he's made promises to us that are good and we turn our back on him, is that is he going to look lightly on that? >> No. >> No. No. Right. But what does that prove if you turn your back on him? >> That you don't believe in him. Yeah. It shows that you never were one of his, doesn't it? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. So, can we ask God to keep us strong? >> Yep. >> Can we ask God to help us to love him and follow him and hear his words? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Do you want to know something interesting? >> What? >> Who do you think was crushed for our sins? >> Jesus. >> Jesus was. That's right. Yeah. And so we so at the same time we don't have to be an abject fear. We can say we know that God loves us and he sent his own son to die for us. So we can listen to his words. You ready to pray? >> Yep. >> All right. Can you pray for us? Sure. hard. Please hope that we have a good day today. And please hope that this this will will help you. And please hope that we'll have a good day. Amen. >> That that it will help God or that it will help us? >> Help us. >> Amen. Well, God, I was called dumb God. That wasn't right.
