Hebrews 9:1-5

Well, good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at the book of Numbers. Hebrews. Hebrews chapter 9. I was thinking about a number. Yep, over here. Hebrews chapter 9. We're going to do verses 1 through 5. Apparently Ellie wants some coffee, so let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word. Alright, we're going to talk today about the tabernacle, Ellie.
The tabernacle. Can you say that? Tabernacle? Tabernacle. The tabernacle. That's right. Do you remember? Yeah, Daniel made a bowl and he left it on my desk. Do you remember what the tabernacle was? Going all the way. Well, it's like a giant tent that's a temple for God in the Old Testament. Maybe I'll show you a picture of it when we're doing this, okay?
Okay, let's pray and then we'll get into God's Word. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your Word and we thank you for the blessing it is to get to follow you. Lord, we pray that you would please help us, that we would understand your Word. We pray that you would please help us, that we would know who you are in Jesus' name. Amen.
All right, so before we start, maybe I'll start with a picture here. I'm going to pull my screen up, okay? Okay, so as we look at our picture here of the tabernacle, we're able to see something really cool. In the tabernacle, you have all these different parts, and on the outside of the tabernacle, by the way, tabernacles, here called a sanctuary, but it's also a tent. And we're able to see that it has an outside courtyard and then the tabernacle proper.
And so in the outside courtyard, we have a veil that people would come through and they would bring their sacrifices or tables for all the different offerings to be cut up and stuff. And here's like the giant barbecue. This is the altar itself, the brazen altar. And so that's where they would burn the animals and the sacrifices. And then as you went forward, you would take towards the tabernacle proper, towards the holy place and the holy of holies, you would have the brazen laver. And so this is used for different washings. And then there would be a door that would go through here, through the outer veil into the holy place. So this is a holy place. And in this holy place, notice there's kind of two different boxes they're trying to show you. So this big one, and then this second one, and this big one out here, this has a few different things inside the holy place.
What has the, the golden lamp stand. And so it looks like a tree and it's supposed to be like it's life. And then here is the golden table. And that's where they would put the show bread. So they would put the bread there in the holy place. And then here you have the altar of incense. And the altar of incense, some people think that it's out here outside the veil.
Interestingly, in the book of Hebrews, it seems like maybe it's inside this inner veil. And this interveiled separates the holy place from the holy of holies. And so it's in that holy of holy place that we have in the book of Exodus and Leviticus, the Ark of the Covenant.
So the Ark of the Covenant is overlaid with gold. It's made of acacia wood. Actually, everything's made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold. And it has these two golden cherubim like angels on top. And this is considered the mercy seat of God. And in that arc of the covenant, there was going to be a few things that the Lord says here. He says that there's going to be the golden jar that has the manna in it and Aaron's rod that had blossomed and the books or the tablets of the covenant. That's what he's talking about here. I wanted you to be able to see that with your eyes. Okay, so we're gonna go ahead and jump over here now. And let's see. Let's see this, ready? Hebrews chapter nine, verses one through five.
Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary. My God had given this to Moses. God had given it to Moses, that's what he's talking about, that whole tabernacle. For a tabernacle was prepared, the first part in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary or the holy place. And behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies, or the holiest of all.
That is old! Well, it's old, but we need to pay attention here, okay? Which had the golden censer, that's that golden incense altar. And the Ark of the Covenant, it's like a box. It's like a big box. Yeah, like a box. And the Ark of the Covenant, it was overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. And above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. of these things we cannot now speak in detail." So, God's saying here that when Moses was there, he gave them a tabernacle and he gave them all sorts of things.
Right? Because there was a service for them to do. That's what verse 1 was talking about. Oh yes, it's a long way away from now, right? It's a long time ago, right? But the point is they had a service to do here on Earth. And Aaron and his sons did it there. I didn't know they lived on Earth. Oh yeah, they lived on Earth. Yeah, they made that when they were in the wilderness. So they made it when they were in the wilderness.
They did these things because God had told them. Mm hmm. He had told them to make it. Actually, he had said that they needed to make sure that they had made everything just as he had told them. Right. So that's what he said in Chapter eight. Yeah, it all had to be overlaid with gold. Yeah. Made of a special wood, it was called acacia wood and overlaid with gold.
It was very expensive. It would be really expensive. It would be twenty dollars. Oh, it would be way more than twenty dollars. Twenty-two? It would be more than all the money that our family has ever made. How much? A lot. Twenty, twenty, twenty, twenty, twenty, twenty-two. Yeah, probably that much. I can't even... But who had God given all these things to? Do you remember? Um...
He gave it to the Israelites. So he gave it to the Israelites and it was part of the Old Covenant. Can you say Old Covenant? Old Covenant. But are we under the Old Covenant? Do we live in the Old Covenant or do we live in the New Covenant? New Covenant, right? The New Covenant in Jesus' blood.
And so this is what he's saying. He's like, hey, you've already had a tabernacle. But we have a better tabernacle, and a better high priest, and better sacrifices. So you may have been able to see the showbread, and the altar, and the lampstand, and the table of incense, and all that type of stuff. But we have what it was all pointing to, which is what Jesus is doing in heaven. How did he talk to them? How did God speak to them? Well, sometimes he spoke through angels. Sometimes he spoke in dreams. Sometimes he spoke with his actual voice. Sometimes he spoke in thunder and lightning. Like you'd be in bed and it'd be thundering and you'd hear... Yeah, that'd be kind of weird, huh? That would be really weird. I wouldn't even believe that.
Yeah, but it was God speaking to them in dreams and visions. But now we have Jesus, and Jesus is our High Priest. And we are able to listen to what He said. So it would be thundering and you would hear, you know, coming. Well, that's what they said they heard with the Ten Commandments.
Oh my goodness, that is really scary. It would be scary, wouldn't it? They said, oh, we can't handle this. Moses, you talk to God, don't let Him talk to us again, or we will Mm-hmm Actually, I'm sorry I did that was about that was in Exodus 19 not an excess 20 God didn't say it in a thundering voice in Exodus 20 It's booked in them before the Ten Commandments in his thundering voice Yeah, so point being right God is holy.
And so if we're gonna go to him, we got to be holy and Jesus makes us holy Yeah, I know. We've talked about a lot of stuff. It's a really long one, isn't it? Did you like learning about the tabernacle? Yeah. Do we need a tabernacle today on earth? No. No, because where's the tabernacle? Where Jesus is at?
In heaven. In heaven. That's right. That's right. You ready to pray? If you can't even get your head, you're all the way up there to heaven. All right, let's pray. God, we thank you for giving us Jesus, our high priest. We thank you that he went beyond the veil and that he lives forever as our high priest. Thank you for the new covenant in his blood, in Jesus's name. Amen. May God bless you. May you trust in Jesus Christ alone as your high priest. May you always know that the new covenant is good.
