Hebrews 6:13-20

yep so we're at Hebrews chapter 6: 13-20 you know what I just realized H I've got your uh almonds in my coffee hiding down in then yummy no well good morning good morning welcome to coffee and devotions this morning we're at Hebrews chapter 6: 13-20 we're going to be talking about what is a example of a faith that perseveres so let's have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into God's word I heated it up I heated it up it's just for you but it's got almond yeah I know you you you ground them up and they got in there that mean I want to eat so you don't want to drink some many some coffee okay you want to pray or want me to pray you pray okay Lord thank you so much for this day thank you for time together thank you for your word Lord we pray that you would please help us help us to understand it help us to be a hope help us to attend there unto with diligence preparation Lord we pray that we would receive it with faith and love laid up in our hearts in Jesus's life in Jesus's name amen all right we are at Hebrews chapter 6 going to finish off this chapter verses 13 through 20 all right how about you read the first paragraph so like 13 to 16 or something 13 through through 18 just for when God made a pro you're okay for when God made a promise to Abraham by him because he could swear by no one greater he swore by himself saying surely blessing I will bless you and multiplying I will multiply you and so after he had patiently endured he obtained the he obtained the promise for man indeed SW by greater and oath for confirmation is for them at an end of all dispute thus God depart to show more abundantly to the HS of Promise the immutability of his councel confirmed it by an oath by that by two immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie we might have a strong consolation who have to lie you might have a strong that we might have a strong consolation who have fled for Refuge to lay hold of the Hope set before us this hope we have as an anchor of the Soul both sure and steadfast and which enters the presence behind the veil where the Forerunner has entered for us even Jesus having become High priest forever according to the order of melkisedek all right so we got three questions we need to ask ourselves a what is this about B what's the b f of semis and C what are we called to do what are we called to do okay so it's a little bit rough uh and difficult reading 13 through 18 but we're going to work through this kind of bits at a time right so uh in the previous verse God had talked about that we need to have diligence and not be sluggish but we need to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises and so what example is he giving here as an example of enduring enduring patience Abraham Abraham good uh for when God made a promise to Abraham because he could swear by no one greater than himself he swore by who swore God swore oh God made a promise to Abraham and he swore he would do these things he took an oath of vow to do these things and and what name did he make the vow in his name CU he was the greatest name possibly it exactly exactly right saying surely I will bless you and multiplying I will multiply you right that's what he said in Genesis chapter 22 so God made an oath I will do this do surely I will do it right uh and so after he had patiently endured who's the who's the he who patiently endured uh who patiently endured Abraham Abraham good so after he had patiently abored endured he obtained the promise and what promise was that uh to multiply yeah notice so how many kids did Abraham have yeah it would surely become a multitude wouldn't it yeah Isaac would have Jacob and Jacob would have 12 sons and it would go on and on and on and the nation would grow like crazy 12 was like the lucky number and then uh in verse 16 for men indeed swear by the greater and an oath for confirmation is for them in end of the dispute right so if you and I are going to Hash it out and I say no I swear to the Lord that this is true does that end the dispute uh sometimes well I mean if it's just between the two of us and there's no other witness and I say I God is my witness I swear to you I didn't do this could be dis dispute yeah it could certainly into a dispute right because do you know that I Fear God yep and so what am I doing I'm calling God's judgment down on me right I'm calling God is my witness but who is God's witness God you can't get higher than him that's the whole point with this right uh thus God determined this is verse 17 look at this with me this is really cool there's a big word you used twice 1 and 17 and 1 and 18 that's God determining to show more abundantly to The Heirs of the promise notice what it said yeah the immutability of his counsel what does that mean immutability yeah what do you think immutability means you want me to not changing not changing good job nice yeah so God's he wanted to show abundantly to The Heirs of the promise the unchangeableness just kind of thought like mutability changing I guess yeah like if something's mutable right if it mutates it changes right but immutability means doesn't change yeah so does God's counsel change nope no God determined that he was going to bless Abraham and what did he do he blessed him right and so because he wanted to show that his his promises were immutable his counsel was immutable he confirmed it by an oath so that by two immutable things and what are the two immutable things uh in which it is impossible for God to lie I think one of them is I don't know yeah so it's the first thing is his truthfulness and the second thing is his counsel confirmed by an oath right so there there's two things that God swears upon right here right and so uh these two immutable things it is impossible for God to lie that we might have a strong consolation who have fled for Refuge to lay hold of this hope set before us right so do we have a hope yep and how do we know that that hope is true because we know God is true because God is true and does God change his mind does this is his Council mutable or immutable uh no doesn't change yeah it's immutable yeah so it doesn't change and so has God made promises and Oaths to us yep even better than that has God made promises and oath to Jesus yeah the father has made promises to Jesus right he declared today you are my son I have begotten you I will make your enemies a foot stol for your feet and if God has promised it if God has said it that's like a check we could take to the bank yeah so what's the result of that verse 18 was the very first part of Verse 18 the all that Theology and going back to Abraham who's waiting on the Promises how does that affect Bubba uh that we know guy doesn't change and that we know that his promises are true good to us good and so our hope isn't based on fake stuff yeah Our Hope isn't faked on fake stuff we changing things but it's a what's the illustration it uses here in verse 18 did you notice the the word picture in verse 18 or verse 19 sorry anchor it's an anchor of the Soul sometimes they're all weak anchor yeah right yeah we we had used to have have an anchor watch on the ship even for an aircraft carrier right because you wanted to make sure that the ship wasn't drifting right but if you get a good anchor and it gets a good bite on the on the seab bottom right I think the uh I think the anchors on our ship were 30 30 tons or 30,000 tons 30 tons yeah 30 tons each uh so 30 tons each but that one 30 ton anchor could hold a ship that was 1,132 ft long how many times oh I forget how many times it was it was a lot more than 30 but it could hold essentially a building a ship the size of the Empire State Building it would have a circle radio that it can move around but was it ever going to drift off no no right you laid the aner you can have a hope at the point as you're firmly fixed on the sea bottom right and so uh notice that there there's a big part here that something changes right verse 19 we have this hope because of who God is and what he's promised both sure and steadfast in which now notice verse 19 in which enters the presence behind the veil where is that getting at when Jesus died the veil was ripped okay Jes when Jesus died the veil was ripped where was The Veil incing The holies to the hly of holies yeah right so the holy place so holy of holies right but that picture was a picture of something in on Earth or in heaven heaven right so Jesus as a great high priest in the Tabernacle in heaven where did he go did he just stay in the Holy place or in the outer Court went to God himself yeah he went to the holy of holies right to the very throne room of God himself that's right so where the Forerunner has entered for us even Jesus and Jesus is what the very last part here in verse uh 19 or verse 20 what's the very last thing this says about Jesus in verse 20 let's flip the page here what's the very last thing about Jesus entering behind that Veil why is he able to do that because it's all melkisedek yeah he's the priest forever in the order of melkisedek right so God made promises to Jesus greater than the Angels better than anything else he had ever made promises to and so what does that mean for you that we get we actually get to know God and not in a way that we have sin and that we have the cow before Oh that's a wonderful a calling yeah we don't have to cow before him right because of our sin but we can come to him knowing that Jesus went before us right I think that's an anchor for our souls God made these promises and are they going to change nope God made these promises and is somebody going to change his mind God made these promises to Jesus and is he going to say you know what Jesus I know you died on the cross but but Nathan's just too bad no right we we can have hope that perseveres that keeps on going like Abraham Abraham trusted in God and God was good to his promise we can have that same type of Hope oh we kind of did A and C what do you think is the best verse what would you underline um best ver to best verse to summarize what we did a whole bunch of verses here which one would you choose um probably do 19 through 20 19 through 20 okay okay yeah I have uh first part of 19 underlined as well I have verse 17 entirely underlined in my Bible I can see 19 and 22 maybe somebody else will say I think something else they they'll tell us on their keyboards what they think so you want to pray or you want me to pray you pray okay Lord thank you so much Lord Jesus Christ the hope of our Salvation our high priest and the Order of melkisedek God we pray that you would please help us to love you and follow you to trust you to our Dying Days give us perseverance Lord we pray in Jesus name amen may the Lord bless you may you rest in Jesus Christ may he be an anchor for your soul may you know that God's promises never change and that Jesus has truly injured
