Hebrews 4:11-13

Hey, hey, good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions this morning. We're at Hebrews chapter 4 verses 11 through 13 just three verses for us today. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day, and we pray that your spirit would please help us. Lord, as we get into your word, it's a fun topic. It's a challenging topic. Lord, we pray that your spirit would please help us not just to understand these things intellectually, but Lord, that your spirit truly would work in our hearts to do the work that only you could do in Jesus's name. Amen. Hebrews chapter four, verses 11 through 13. Here we go. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience.
For the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. For there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of him to whom we must give an account."
Well, we need to ask ourselves, A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do? So, A, what's this about? This is about disbelieving disobedience. Disbelieving disobedience. Look at what is going on here.
Remember the first ten verses of chapter four and the couple right before that in chapter three are all about comparing those people in the wilderness who did not enter into God's promised rest because of their disobedience And then even when the people during Joshua's day entered into the promised land, they did not seem to enter into the rest that was being promised. And then David is given this prophecy by the Lord in Psalm 95, that the day if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.
What is that rest pointing to? That rest is pointing to Jesus, that's what the best verse yesterday was about. For he who has entered his rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from his. So Jesus has entered into his rest. So since that's the case, verse 11, let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest. that rest being Jesus.
Enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. What's the example of disobedience? The people who at the place in which they went to have the Kadesh Barnea, where they sent the spies into the promised land, and then they didn't leave, and they wouldn't go, they wouldn't enter into that rest. That's the example. This is a contrast here. Lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience where they heard the gospel. Wasn't that interesting last time, right?
Verse 2 of chapter 4, for indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them. They heard the gospel that God would be their covenant king, that they could walk in his ways, that they could follow after him, that he would provide for them everything that they needed and they would find rest in him.
And they disbelieved and were disobedient. And the Lord says here, let us therefore be diligent to enter that restless anyone according to the same example of disobedience. We don't want to fall in that same way. How are they disobedient? And that's where we look previously in chapter four, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
They heard the word, which they had heard, but it didn't profit them. Why didn't it profit them? They heard God speaking from the mountain. Why didn't it profit them? Because they didn't hear with faith. They didn't mix it with faith, even though they heard the word that wasn't mixed with faith.
And that's where verses 12 and 13 is getting at. That when God speaks, it's powerful. And God knows exactly what's going on in the heart. Verses 12 and 13 are often used for giving us, for bibliology, for what God's word is, but specifically tied to what God's word does as well. It's a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. The Lord knows whether or not we are disobedient in our disbelief, not mixing his word with faith. clinging and trusting in Him, resting in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. So that's what verses 12 and 13 are getting at. For the word of the Lord is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open before Him, to the eyes of Him who must, to whom we must give account. a bit we're going to get to for it is appointed for every man to die once and then after that the judgment right the lord isn't some fool ignorant he knows what's going he knew what was going on in the hearts of the people in the wilderness and he knows what's going on in our hearts And so the best verse for this, I think, is verse 11. And this calling comes from verse 11.
Therefore, let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest. Do you rest alone in Jesus Christ for your salvation? Do you hear the gospel? Do you hear the good news? That Jesus Christ has come to save sinners, and we must repent of our sins, turn unto him, rest in him, walk in his ways. Do you take it seriously? Do you enter the rest of Jesus, knowing that your works will never be good enough? That Jesus really finished his work and rested, and now you can receive and rest in him alone for salvation. You can't fool God. You can't fool him by thinking that somehow you can love your sin as much as you love Jesus. You can't fool him into thinking somehow you're more righteous than you are.
He knows you, he knows me, he knows our hearts. There's nothing hidden from him, but all things are laid naked and bare and open. And so do we just submit to him? Yeah, Lord, that's who I am. Teach me your ways, forgive me my sins. Rest in Him. Then you're living your life in obedience to that gospel. Is that who you are? Do you rest in Jesus alone for your salvation? He's the one with the finished work, not us. The only sabbatismos rest we have is in Jesus.
So don't be disobedient. Don't be disbelieving like those people who died in the wilderness. Because even though they had the gospel preached to them, they wouldn't believe. I pray that the Holy Spirit will give you the ability to cling to rest in Jesus alone for salvation.
Let's pray. Father, I don't know who's listening to this today. Lord, I don't know who it is that's wrestling with you right now. who acts like they're righteous and thinks that they're going to enter into your rest by their own works. But Lord, I pray that, Father, you would please let us take seriously this call. We must not be like those in the wilderness who had the gospel preached to them, but yet did not believe and were disobedient to your covenant.
God, we pray that you would teach us. that the only rest that we could possibly have is in Jesus. So Father, please, while it's still today, let us find rest in you. Thank you for giving us such an amazing salvation. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. May the Lord bless you. May you rest in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. May you receive him.
