Hebrews 4:1-10

You mean you just woke up? You woke up 2 hours ago. I woke up 1 hour and 22 and 20 minutes. 22 minutes. That's right. Well, good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotion. This morning we are at Hebrews chapter 4 verses 1 through 10. We're going to be talking about Sabbath. Ooh, let me move this microphone over here. We went way far away from that. We're going to be talking about the Sabbath and faith. Sound good? Sabbath and faith. Sabbath and faith. Rest in faith. All right, let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. Rest in faith. Would you like some coffee? Hot. It's warm. Yeah. I don't think it's super hot. You don't have to drink it if you don't want to though. It's not very strong coffee this morning. Is it good? Okay. All right, let's have We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. God, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for your word. Thank you for the blessing of being able to spend time together. Please help us as we read your word. Teach us to walk in your ways in Jesus' name. Amen. All right. Here we go. We're at Hebrews chapter 10. Or Hebrews chapter 4 verses 1 through 10. Therefore, since a promise remains for entering his rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. For indeed, the gospel was preached to us as well as to them. Them them, the good news was preached to the people and in the wilderness. That's what the the them is talking about cuz it was that was what it was going on in chapter 3 verses 4 through or 16 through 20. 16 through 19, sorry. So, the gospel was preached to them in the wilderness. But the word which they heard did not profit them. Not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. So, even though they heard it, they didn't have faith. They didn't have faith. For we have believed for we who have believed do not enter or do enter that rest, as he said. Okay, can you read here? So, I swore I swore in my wrath they wrath they shall not enter my rest. Although the work works were finished from the foundation of the world for he has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way. Can you read right here? And God rested on the seventh day from at from all his works. And again in this place, they shall not enter my rest. Since therefore it remains that some must enter it and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, again he designates a certain day saying in David, "Today after such a long time as it has been said, "Today if you will hear his voice do not harden harden your hearts." Do not harden your hearts. Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. For if Joshua had given them rest then he would not afterwards have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered his rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from his. Ooh, we got three questions. The first one's going to be a little bit difficult. A, what is this about? B, what's the is supposed to summarize the whole thing. And C, what are we called to called to do? Okay, so what is this about? So, this is this is all very much tied into each other, okay? So, God had been telling them about how Jesus was faithful and how they needed to be faithful. But then he said, "But not everybody's been faithful." Remember the people in the wilderness? When they were at Kadesh-barnea, did they want to go after the spies said, "We're going to We're like little grasshoppers. You're going to squash us." Did they want to go in? Nope. Nope. And so he said, "Okay, well, hold on. So, there's still a promised rest." And so, why didn't they get to enter the rest? Cuz they heard the gospel. It was preached to them. But what did they not What did they not do? They didn't have Mhm. Faith. they didn't have faith, right? So, they didn't have faith. And so God swore to them, this is quoting from Psalm 95, "You're not going to enter into my rest. Mhm, not going to happen." And so, although the works were finished from the foundation of the world, meaning what Jesus did, for he has spoken us in the seventh place a certain way, right? What did God do on the seventh day of creation? Made people. Nope, that was the sixth day. And after God had seen everything that he had made, he said it was all good. And on the seventh day, God rested. rested. Well, I don't think God went to sleep, right? God neither slumbers nor sleeps. Uh but, uh he said, "Since therefore it remains that some must enter it," meaning rest, and it wasn't to the people in the wilderness cuz they didn't believe, he must have a different day in which he's talking about his rest. He said to David in Psalm 95, "Right today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." Okay, so what rest is he talking about? Uh she's this sit around, not watch anybody. No, I don't think that's the rest he's talking about. Notice in verse 8, to get praised Well, yeah, God's going to get praised by the people, right? They're going to rest in Well, they're going to rest in God, specifically in Jesus. Notice verse 8, "For if Joshua had given them rest," what did Joshua do? He led them into where? The promised land. He led them into the promised land. So, were they wandering in the wilderness anymore? Nope. And after they fought all their battles, did they get to settle down their houses? Yep. But they didn't own them. Well, this type of rest isn't that type of sleeping rest, right? But he said that wasn't their rest. So, what rest is the seventh is the Sabbath pointing to? What rest is this? Yeah, there remains a rest, a sabbathismos for the people of God. For he who has entered his rest himself has ceased from his work as God did from his. Who do you think ceased from his work as God did? Jesus. Jesus did. After he had finished all of his work, what work did he do? Went up into God and sat on his Yeah, so he accomplished our redemption, didn't he? Did he buy us at the price of his own blood? Yes, he did. Oh, yes, he did. And then, uh he was in the grave for 3 days and then he conquered death or did he lose to death? He conquered. And then, what happened after he was he conquered death? He rose again from the dead. And then, he Where did he go after he rose from the dead? Heaven. Heaven, right? He ascended up into heaven. And so, he has rest. That's what it's talking about. So, we have Where do we have our rest? In God, specifically in the finished work of God. In the finished work of Jesus, right? Cuz Jesus has entered his rest and we have faith in Jesus. Right, so we have rest in Jesus. So, what's this whole thing about? How would you summarize all of this in Daniel's words? By the way, your black eye from that shovel accident is looking pretty good. How would you summarize all of this? God rested. He made everything, then he rested. Yeah, and I think the uh that seventh day of the of creation was pointing to Jesus's finished work. Because is Jesus resting? Mhm, yeah. Right, Jesus has entered into his his rest. His rest. Well, not that way. Not that way, right? It's the same way like when we rest on the Sabbath, do we just take naps? Nope. Nope, but do we God and then we And we praise God and then we take naps. Okay, Sunday afternoon naps, okay. Right, but the point is, right, we can have rest in Jesus. I think that's the calling. We shouldn't be like the Israelites in the wilderness who heard the gospel but didn't mix it with faith. But we should believe, cling to, and trust in Jesus and rest in him alone for salvation. Is that good? Yep. All right. Best verse I have in my Bible, verse 10, double underlined. See it? I have it in my Bible. I underline all everything. You you would You always want to underline everything. it all in my Bible. All right. Do you want to pray or do you want me to pray? You pray. Okay. Lord, thank you so much for the rest you give us in Jesus. God, we pray that we would not have hard hearts like the people at Meribah and that were sent out the spies and refused to go in. Lord, we thank you that our rest is better than what the first Joshua gave. Lord, but you have sent us the true Joshua, Jesus, Yeshua. Lord, we pray that we would rest in him. Give us faith, Lord. Give us peace and hope in Jesus' name. Amen. What did Joshua do again? Joshua brought them into the promised land. Remember when they defeated Jericho and then Ai and uh eventually Jerusalem and etc. etc. What How did Joshua die again? How did Joshua die? We'll read Joshua sometime. How's that sound? Yeah. Okay.
