Deuteronomy 34

Oh, good morning, good morning, good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotion. This morning we are at Deuteronomy chapter 34. We finished Today we will finish the two-year project through the Pentateuch. So, started this in 2023. Now it's the end of 2024, almost. It's October 1st and when we're recording this and we will be done with What happens after Deuteronomy? Deuteronomy. Do you know what we're doing next? Nope. Hebrews. Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Hebrews. Next would be Joshua and then Judges, but all the all the Old Testament, especially the laws, are summarized up by the book of Hebrews. So, we're going to go read the book of Hebrews after this. So, I'm going to have to find the book mark. Yeah, it's way in the back. All right. Well, let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's word. I'm going to try a sip. Ooh, he's going to try a little bit. Ooh, there's another beard beard here I just saw come up. Oh boy. All right. You ready to pray? Yep. All right. Are you praying or am I? You pray. Okay. Lord, we thank you so much for this day. Thank you, Father, for time together. Thank you for your word. Lord, we pray that your spirit would be working in our hearts. Sometimes we come to your word and we're lazy in our brains. Sometimes we come to your word and we're unmotivated in our hearts. So, Father, we pray that your spirit would please help us. Teach us, Lord, in Jesus' name. Amen. Here we go. Deuteronomy chapter 34. Uh how about we just go paragraph to paragraph. Sound good? All right. You want to read first or me? I can't. So, I'm reading probably like 1 through 4. to 4. Yeah. Then Moses went up from the from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo to top of Pisgah. Mhm. Which is across from Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land of Gil- Gilead? Gilead, good. Gilead, as far as Dan, all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, the south and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to him, "This is the land of which I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your descendants. I have caused you to caused you to see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.'" So, Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab according to the word of the Lord. And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor. But no one knows his grave to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eyes were not dim, nor his natural vigor diminished. And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab 30 days. So, the days of weeping and mourning for Moses ended. All right. Read verse 9. Mhm. Mhm. Now Joshua, the son of Nun, was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands upon him. So, the children of Israel headed Heeded. Heeded him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, and all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt before Pharaoh, before all his servants, and in all his land. And by all that mighty power and all that generation and all that great and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. All right. So, three questions. A, what's this? That. B, what's the Best verse to summarize it. And C, what are we Called to do. All right. So, what's this about? Uh Moses. Okay. Land and So, yeah, so Moses and the land and stuff. So, Moses is taken to the top of Mount Nebo and he on the other side of in Moab, right? That's a nation just to the east. And he's shown this whole area. And why is he being shown this whole area? Because Isn't it I always find it interesting like to know like Moses you think Moses must be a man of God cuz he knows he's going to die. Mhm. And he still goes up. Mhm. And God says, "This is the land that you could have had." Mhm. Would have given it. But remember, why was the Lord giving them this land? Did you pick that up? Cuz he promised Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. Yeah, that was 400 years earlier. Had God forgotten? No. No, right? And so God had done this. He had he would had promised he and he was making it good in their in their sight. But Moses, even though his eyes aren't dim and he's still full of vigor, right? Uh he goes down to the valley opposite Beth Peor. And what happens? He dies. He dies. And there's a giant tombstone for his grave. Yep. We just can't find it. Yeah, nobody knows where it's at. Nobody knows where his grave is. What do the people he was on? Well, it says right here that he's on Mount Nebo. Uh Nebo Nebo, sorry, on the top of Pisgah. So, he's he's uh kind of to the east and up. Uh so, anyways, let's keep going keep on going. know which There's they think they know which one is Mount Pisgah. Yeah. So, uh the point is we don't know where it is. that if you blew up the mountain, you'd still know. Well, the point is, right? It's on the it's in Moab. It's in the plains of Moab. That there the people how did they respond? Sad. Yeah, they said they weep for 30 days, it says. think he's been with with them two generations? Yeah, so you yeah, so through their father's generation now through theirs, right? They've known nothing but three generations. Yeah, especially the young guys, right? They've known nothing but all the the sorry, the younger generation, men and women, right? They've they've known nothing but Moses' leadership under the Lord. And so, they weep and they cry, but has the Lord left them alone? No. Who does he leave them? Joshua. Joshua. That's right. Joshua, the son of Nun. And it says here he was full of the spirit of wisdom. Moses had laid his hands on him. And the children of Israel heeded him as they did Moses. Right? This is what the Lord had done. So, I sometimes I wonder right the tradition we have passed down to us from the Jewish people as well as from the church fathers is that Moses himself wrote the five books of Moses. But I sit here and wonder, I wonder if Moses wrote these last verses or if Joshua wrote the last verses. Yeah. Who's who's writing? Yeah, right? Uh I don't think it was somebody hundreds and hundreds of years later. I think it really was that generation. But it's just one of those interesting things. So, let's go ahead and how did The thing is with that is I'm I'm kind of thinking if it was right then there, like how did they not know where he died? Well, that's what I'm saying. I mean, they Who wrote this and how did they Yeah. How did they know that he died somewhere in that plain? Well, so it's got to be it can't be too far back, but it can't be too old cuz if it was too old, then then they could have really gone over there. unless Moses writes this about himself and he's writing it prophetically. He was prophetic. Like the Lord's telling him to write these things. And he knows what's about to happen. And then he goes and experiences it. So, he So, writes it beforehand. Yeah. Yeah. All right. So, let's talk about the best verse. What would you underline? who wrote that? Nobody knows where he was. Well, that's what I'm saying. It's either somebody like Joshua, that's one hypothesis, or like Joshua like wrapped up the book, kind of like uh Frodo wrapping up Bilbo's story. Or it's Moses wrapping up his own story. So, Cuz maybe he knows God's going to like burn him up. Okay. Well, you're going all the way down. I don't want to run run down that area of speculation. So, let's go down to B, best verse. What do you think is the best verse to summarize this section? Mhm. Oh, you shut your Bible. Don't shut your Bible. Uh Putting your sword in its sheath. I think 10. Verse 10? Yeah. All right, good. Yeah, I I I I I can see why you would do verse 10. That's great. Uh I wouldn't maybe underline verse 6. That's what I have underlined in my Bible, but yeah, I can see verse 10. Okay. Well, let's get the last C calling. What are we called to do? Um Follow God. Okay, so why would you say this teaches us to serve God? Yeah, like Moses served God, too. Okay, so you're saying Moses' example shows you an example of faithful service to the Lord. Oh, it pointed to you. Yeah, you want to actually one of the things that I think is interesting, right? One greater than Moses came and his name was his he's Jesus. Interestingly, now Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. But do you know what Jesus' name in Hebrew is? What? Yeshua. What? Joshua. Right, we have a greater one than Joshua with us now. Right, we we have one who we can follow and serve. So, whoop, I got an alarm going off on my computer. Let me get this work. So, let's go ahead and um You ready to pray? Yep. Okay. Lord, we thank you so much for the example that we have had in Moses. We thank you for teaching us as we've worked through these five books of the first five books of the Old Testament, the Pentateuch. Lord, we pray that we would fear you and walk in your ways. That we would have a reverential and loving awe of who you are. Lord, we thank you that you have given us one better than Moses and better than Joshua, Jesus Christ. Lord, we pray thanking you that he was not buried never to live again. But Lord, we thank you that you you had even our Lord Jesus. Though he was put to death for our sins, yet he was raised for our justification. And you are not the God of the dead, but of the living. So, Lord, we thank you. We thank you for giving us Jesus and for giving us life. In his name we pray. Amen. May Lord bless you. May you walk in the joy and peace that comes from Jesus Christ. We'll see you next time.
