All right, hey
good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and devotions. I'm gonna jump on my computer here. Make sure everybody's able to join us online.
Go ahead and send out the text message to everyone.
Make sure that we are going live online. We are almost there.
Today we're at First Thessalonians chapter five.
And we are live Wonderful. Well good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and devotions. This where every day you and I we get together. We have a little bit of coffee. We get into God's word and we grow in our love for the Lord together in this year. 2022. Lord willing, we'll make it from the book of Acts two. I hope that in the first Thessalonians we only got a few days left. Hey, I need your help.
My thought is next year to start at the book of Genesis and see how far we get. What do you think about that I need your input or is there something else that you would rather do? Would you rather just keep going with Second Thessalonians and keep moving through the New Testament? Normally go New Testament Old Testament back and forth each year? I was thinking about doing Genesis and just going through and seeing how far we get. We'd probably get somewhere through Leviticus or something like that.
Let me know. Is there something else maybe you want to do some historical books or maybe some of the prophets? Let me know down in the comments, you know, bleep bloop, bloop write them down there. Let me know would you would you like to do Genesis or would you like to keep going in the New Testament or is there something else you would like to do in 2023? Well, let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word.
Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day.
This is the day that you have made. And Father we rejoice and are glad because of you. Lord, we thank You that You are the God of all time and creation. And that you have given us your timeless word that we can come to you and we can learn a view of your will and how we ought to live before you. Father, please be our teacher today. Give us your Holy Spirit. We pray in Jesus's name, Amen. All right, so we are at First Thessalonians chapter five First Thessalonians chapter five. And we'll begin at verse one, and we'll read through verse 11.
But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have not need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them as labor pains upon a pregnant woman, as they shall not escape. But you brethren are not in darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of the night nor of darkness therefore, let us not sleep as others do. But let us watch and be sober.
For those who sleep sleep at night and those who get drunk, get drunk at night, but let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love as and as a helmet of and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us that whether we wake or sleep we should live together with him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another just as you also are doing. We need to ask ourselves first a What's this about b What's the best first to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words? So first a What is this about? Well, Paul is just said it comforting each other with Christ coming in the previous portion and chapter four verses 13 through 18. Right. He's told them that we don't grieve as those without hope. He says, but there's something you need to realize about the coming of the Lord. It's coming like a thief in the night.
I cannot stand these prophecy our things, want to kind of do people 99 reasons why Jesus is coming in 1999 or you know, people will say, Oh, the Euphrates River is drying up today. And so and so we know that this is happening or Oh Russia is invading this this nation and so we know that the prophecies are about to happen with this.
Nobody knows the time or the hour.
This is not telling us that we ought to be those who are always we're trying to figure out world history and read into God's secret providence and and into his secret will and say, Okay, this is the day that this is going to happen. I gotta tell you, I've been alive for long enough that I've heard a few of these prophecies when the end of the world is coming. And I gotta tell you, every single one of them has been wrong so far, which makes me somewhat dubious of these claims. But Jesus Himself is the one who said no one knows the time or the hour. It's kind of common and here it's like a thief in the night.
Now, that doesn't mean that it didn't have any effect in our lives. Actually. Paul says here in this passage, that it ought to have effects in our life.
The fact that we know Jesus is going to return ought to change how we live now because we don't know when it's going to happen. It could happen today.
It can happen in 1000 years, we don't know. And so it ought to change our lives because we don't know when our Lord is returning. But we want to be found faithful stewards. We don't want to be found like those who are drunk stagger around in the middle of the day and have no clue what's going on. Instead, we ought to live with holiness and righteousness. And so he says, in verse six specifically, are verse five and six, you are all sons of light and of the day we are not of the night or of nor of darkness, Therefore let us not sleep as others dudes, but let us watch and be sober.
Right we ought to be waiting for the Lord watching for the Lord, sober and ready for when he returns.
And what does that look like by putting on the breastplate of faith in love and as a helmet, the hope of salvation? That's what it looks like.
Right to put on this breastplate of faith and love, right to go about our daily business walking around, knowing that we are loved by God that we love God that we love others and also as a helmet, the hope of salvation. Right? We can walk around in the daily battle of this life being protected in our mind.
Because our minds are subjected to the will of God, and to the knowledge that our savior is coming back again. And so we're to comfort and encourage each other with these things. Well, what's the best first to summarize? Oh, in my Bible, I have verse six, summarized or underlined in my Bible. I think that's kind of what's getting at the heart here, but that's also the seat calling. What are you called to do in response to this? Do you live your life in the light of Jesus's return?
Do you live your life doing whatever you want or do you live your life knowing that someday your master is going to show up? And he's going to be like a man who had a vineyard and he is the owner of the master of the vineyard and he left and went on a far trip and we are servants of the vineyard and we are to be tending the garden, but we don't know when he's going to return.
And when He returns, he's going to take stock of how we have tended his garden.
The question is, how have you been tending the garden of your life?
If you've been stumbling around stumbling around like a drunken fool Have you just been doing whatever you wanted? Carelessly carousing throughout your life or are you a faithful servant?
Are you one found waiting for your Lord to return not sitting on your laurels?
But busy about your work with your own hands walking around with a breastplate of love and righteousness and the helmet of salvation?
Are you going about the Lord's business, waiting for him to return? Do you live in the light of glory?
Let's pray.
Father, we pray that you would teach us to live in the light of Your glory that we would follow after you and love you.
Please, Lord and care for us to stay in Jesus's name, Amen. Good Lord bless you. May walk in the joy and peace of Jesus Christ. And I'll see you tomorrow. Bye
