1 Samuel 9:1-16

Alright, yep, so 1st Samuel chapter 9. Good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. We are going to be at 1st Samuel chapter 9. And so the people have just asked Samuel, they said, we want a king. We want to be like all the other nations. And God says, go ahead and listen to them. They're not rejecting you, but they're rejecting me. Yeah, that's what he tells them, right? You're going to regret it. That's what a king is going to be like.
So we've had some coffee. Do you want any? She's just like it is what it is. It is what it is. Yeah. OK. You've been watching too much Ryan Trahan. All right. So let's let's have let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for giving us this day. And I pray that you would please help us as we read your word, that we would understand it. We pray that your Holy Spirit would teach us how to live it. Lord, we pray that you would give us hope, pointing us to Jesus, our King. In his name we pray. Amen.
Here we go. 1 Samuel chapter 9. Chapter 9 right here. And we will read. Let's see. I don't think we're going to read the whole thing. Let me see what my notes say we're supposed to do. Let's do one through We'll do one through 14. Okay? All right. You want to start reading? So you'll read a paragraph and I'll read and we'll just kind of say what it's about as we go.
There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish. Kish. The son of Abiel, the son of Zeruah, the son of Batroth, the son of Aphiah, the son of Benjamite, and mighty man of power. And he had a choice and hands um son whose name was Samuel no his name wasn't Samuel his name was Saul there was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel now his from his from his He was taller than any of the people. Okay, so this is talking about a man named Kish and Kish has what? Saul. His son Saul. And how is Saul described? Giant and handsome. Alright, big and handsome.
Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul's father, were lost and Kish said to his son Saul, please take one of the servants with you and arise, go and look for the donkeys. So he passed through the mountains of Ephraim and through the land of Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shalim and they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but he did not find them." Verse 5. When they had come to the land of Zup, Saw said to his servant who was with him, Come, let us return. Let my father cease caring about the donkeys and become worried about us. So the donkeys are lost. Saul's on a search and find mission. He goes here and there and everywhere, can't find them. And what does he tell his servant? I should go back so his dad won't get worried. Good.
And he said to him, look, there is a city of there is a city, a man. Look, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honorable man. All that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there. Perhaps he can show us the way that we should go. Alright, so what does the servant say in verse 6? Oh, there is a man who can show us where to go. Good.
In verse 7. Then Saul said to his servant, But look, if we go, what shall we bring the man for the bread? All right, so what does Saul say to his servant? We have to give to him. Yeah. Yeah. Empty. Yeah. Good. And the servant answered Saul and said, Look, I have here at hand one fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God to tell us our way. Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he spoke thus. Come, let us go to the seer. For he who is now called a prophet was formerly called a seer. So what was that part about?
Yeah, quarter shekel and they're gonna go but then it's interesting they talk about going and seeing It's almost like this is written later Yeah, but you notice it was saying in former times they call they used to call prophets a Seer yeah, right so like somebody who can see things that other people can't right but the point being is There's somebody who's kind of editing or writing this who's there's enough background away from here that they're saying, hey, look. Don't don't get confused by this.
All right. Go ahead and read verse 10. Formerly in Israel. Then Saul said to his servant, Well said, Come, let us go. So they went to the city where the man of God was. As they went up the hill to the city, they met some young women going out to draw water and said to them, Is the seer here? and they answered them and said, yes, there he is just there. Just ahead of you. Why don't you put your finger? We'll help you. Oh, hurry now. For today he came to this city because as you come. There is a? is a sacrifice of people today on the high place number 13 as soon as you as you come in into the city you will surely find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice. Afterwards, those who are invited will eat. Now, therefore, go up for about this time. You will find him.
So they went up to the city. As they were coming up into the city, there was Samuel coming up, coming out toward them on his way up to the high place. That's kind of stopping right in the middle. Do we want to stop here? I think we could finish this page. OK, we can finish verse 15, that's fine.
Now the Lord had told Samuel in his all year yeah the day before samuel well before saw came saying tomorrow about this time i will send you a man and over my people from the land from the land of benjamin and you shall anoint him commander over my people israel that he may serve my may save my people from the hand of the philistines for i have looked up my people because they cry has come to me for i have looked upon my people because their cry has come to me all right so what happens there uh he's annoyed Well, not yet. Jesus. God had spoken to Samuel. Yes. And what did he tell Samuel? The day before Saul had shown up, what did God say to Samuel in his ear? You shall anoint him commander. You shall anoint him commander. Good. And then he anointed David. Well, that's not for a while. So Saul is going to become the first king, it seems like.
So do you want to stop here? Okay, so what do you think this is about I think it this is about Okay, this is about Saul and how he meets Samuel and or it's about to meet Samuel and become king I think it's about And about his donkeys, do you like the onos part of it? The onos. Yeah, so that's Greek for donkey, right? All right, so... Okay, so that's a good what's about. What do you think is the best verse to summarize this section, then?
I think... And you shall anoint him commander over my people of Israel. Okay. That he may save people from the hand of the Philistines. Okay, so you want verse 15 because God hears their cries and he's telling Samuel that Saul is going to leave? And he's going to save the people. Okay, yeah. So, isn't it interesting that the king is also called the commander? Right? So the idea of a warrior king, a champion, right? Jesus is a commander. The king will command. Yeah, he's the one who commands, you know, the twelve legions of angels. Commander of commanders. Yeah, he's the commander of commanders, the king of kings, the lord of lords. Right, yeah, that's Jesus for us. I think that's how this points us to Jesus. What about you? Kind of like the lord in the wings, the king of all kings.
Yeah, and what has Jesus, right, do we need saved from the hands of the Philistines? Mm-hmm. No. We need saved. From the hands of the Philistines, right? Mm-hmm. That's what we're worried about, is we're worried about people from Philistia coming? We're worried about sin. Yeah, sin and death, Satan and the reign of this world. I bet these people are scared of the Philistines. Yeah, it's meant to be this bigger picture for us, isn't it? These guys would be jumping off their boots. Yeah, they were. They were afraid of a real, a real live army who was trying to kill them. Yeah. So, so that's good. That's what this is about.
So, uh, and the best verse and what we're, so, okay. So you pointed us to Christ. So what do we call it to do then? to worship him. Okay, good. Yeah. We call it the look to Christ, follow worship. Good. Are you ready to pray? Yep. Let's go ahead.
God, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you that we get the blessing of following Jesus, the one who rules even today, high above all thrones and principalities and authorities and lordships, because he is the King of Kings, our Prince of Peace, our victor, who is the champion over even sin and death. Lord, we pray that we would follow after you and love you. Help us, Lord, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
Well, may God bless you. May you go to Christ, who though he has no comeliness that we should be attracted to him, unlike Saul who is handsome and big. Well, Jesus is bigger than Saul. Jesus is better than Saul, even though in his earthly form he had no majesty or comeliness that we should be attracted to him. Even Paul. Yeah, but...
