1 Samuel 28

There you go. Good job. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are going to start 1 Samuel chapter 28. And it's kind of this weird story where David is with the Philistines. Yep. Those are Judah's enemies. Judah's! Yeah, Judah and Israel. My brother. Not your brother, Judah. Right.
But the point is, this is the Jewish people's enemies. and yet David is possibly gonna fight on their side and then there's a madman Saul and what is he gonna do? He's desperate. Desperate times make him do desperate things and that's not really good.
So let's have some coffee. Are you gonna have my, okay. We're gonna have some coffee, pray and get into God's word. That's enough, that's enough. Are you okay? Okay, let's pray. God, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for time together and thank you for your word. Please help us as we read to understand. Let's cough away from the microphone, okay? Thank you. God, we pray that you would please help us to understand your word. In Jesus's name, amen. Oh, you know what this means? It means that you can't ever have coffee again. It must make you cough. Coffee and cough. Okay, you ready? Oh boy, you haven't coughed like this at all. This is out of nowhere. Alright, you ready?
Here we go. First Samuel 28. Now it happened in those days that the Philistines gathered their armies together for war to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, you assuredly know that you will go out with me to battle. break. Are you okay? Are you sure? Okay. And Akish said to David, you assuredly know that you will go out with me to battle, you and your men. And David said to Akish, surely you know what your servant can do.
Is David going to go to war with his own people? He went to the Philistines because he didn't want to die because Saul wanted to kill him. But now he might have to fight against his own people. What's he going to do? And he said to David, therefore, I will make you one of my chief guardians forever. Now, Samuel had died. He was the prophet and the judge, Samuel. And all Israel had lamented for him and buried him in Ramah, in his own city. And Saul had put the mediums and the spiritists out of the land. He had gotten rid of all the witches. King Saul did.
Is that a good thing? Yeah. What's witches? People who are like casting spells and talking to the dead. They can't even cast spells! Well, I think people maybe they can. They're just doing magic. I think there are people who deal with things that are spiritual and doctrines of demons that aren't good. There are supernatural things that we ought not to be playing around with, I think. Well, then the Philistines gathered together and came and encamped at Shuam. So Saul gathered all Israel together and they encamped at Gilboa. When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid. And his heart trembled greatly.
And when Saul inquired of Jehovah, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by the prophets. God wouldn't answer Saul. Then Saul said to his servant, Find a woman who is of medium, that I may go and inquire of her. inquire, like, I'm going to go ask her.
He's going to go ask a witch. But he had kicked out all the witches. Yeah. And his servant said to him, in fact, there is a woman who is a medium at Endor. So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night. And he said, please conduct a seance for me and bring up for me the one I shall name to you. He wants to bring up the spirit of a dead person. Yeah. Then the woman said to him, Look, you know that's all what Saul has done and how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritist is from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life to cause me to die? And Saul swore to her by Jehovah, saying, As Jehovah lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.
And the woman said, whom shall I bring up for you? And he said, bring up Saul for me. When the woman saw Samuel, or sorry, bring up Samuel for me. So when the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a lot, it doesn't say eek there, I made that part up, but it says she cried out with a loud voice.
And the woman spoke to Saul saying, why have you deceived me? For you are Saul. And the king said to her, do not be afraid. What do you see? And the woman said to Saul, I saw a spirit ascending out of the earth. And he said to her, what is his form? And she said, an old man is coming up and he is covered with a mantle. It's like a piece of cloth over his head. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel. And he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed down.
Now Samuel said to Saul, why have you disturbed me by bringing me up? Saul answered, I am deeply distressed for the Philistines make war against me and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore neither by prophets nor by dreams therefore I have called to you that you may reveal to me what I should do. Then Samuel said, why do you ask me seeing the Lord has departed from you and has become your enemy?
And the Lord has done for himself as he spoke by me, for the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor David, because you did not obey the voice of the Lord nor execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek. Therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day. Moreover, Jehovah will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines." Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground and was dreadfully afraid because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him for he had eaten no food all day or all night.
And the woman came to Saul and saw that he was severely troubled and said to him, Look, your maidservant has obeyed your voice and I have put my life in my hands and have heeded the words which you spoke to me. Now, therefore, please heed also the voice of your maidservant and let not a piece of bread or let me set a piece of bread before you and eat that you may have strength when you go on your way. But he refused and said, I will not eat. So his servants, together with the woman, urged him and he heeded their voice.
Then he arose from the ground and sat on the bed. Now the woman had a fattened calf in the house and she hastened to kill it and she took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread from it. So she brought it before Saul and his servants and they ate. Then they arose and went away that night." What was that story, eh, about?
Sam will tell Saul he's going to die. I think it's almost like Saul is so afraid that he will even go to a witch to try to get direction. He wants control. He wants power. He wants to be able to know what am I supposed to do and how do I know the outcome because I want my dynasty. I want to win. I want to stay king. I want Jonathan to be king. And he's willing to do anything to accomplish it. Well, he's got to ask God. He did and God won't answer him. Because God's already spoken through Samuel saying, you're not going to be king. The kingdom is going to be torn from you and given to David. And what does the spirit of Samuel say to him?
You're gonna get killed. Yeah, it's just like I told you. You're gonna be here in the place of the dead with me soon. And he's doing a tantrum. Yeah. Yeah, he's kind of desperate. And is he doing good things or bad things? Bad things. Yeah. You have to pop your knuckles. Oh, I'm going to pop my knuckles. I don't think you can. All right.
So what do you think you're called to do from this? What does this teach you? What do you think, Gilbo? Don't try to get directions from a witch. That's probably a good idea. Don't take your directions from a witch, right? Yeah, when you're desperate for things and even after the Lord's told you no, don't go here and you want something different. Does it go well? Aren't you glad we have a king who's better than Saul? Did Jesus ever go to a witch to find out his information? He already knew his intimates.
Yeah, isn't that great? Yeah. Yeah. It's wonderful to know that we have a king that his father in heaven said, this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. Good to have that type of king, huh? Yeah. But the king have a son, but the son is actually God. The king. God have a son, but the son is that God. Oh, the son, yeah, both of them. Right, so all three. There's three persons of the Godhead. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. You're right. Yeah. You ready to pray? Okay.
Father, we pray that we would look to you and you only for these types of things. We pray that you would keep us from spiritists and mediums and witchcraft. Lord, we pray that you would please help us to walk in your ways and we thank you for giving us a perfect and righteous king Jesus in his name we pray amen may god bless you listen nope we're done with coffee and we'll see you next time bye-bye let's play bye-bye good
