1 Samuel 26

Good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions version 2.0. What happens when you have a hell-bent madman wanting to kill someone and he takes a nap? Better than I'm going to the bathroom. So, we're at 1 Samuel chapter 26. We got the Judah man with us today. He's a little bit sick, so if he's whiny, we'll try to give him a little bit of grace. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray. We'll get into God's Word.

God, we thank you for giving us time together, and we thank you for time to read your Bible. We pray that we would read it, understand it, and that it would help us to live in Jesus' name. Amen. All right, 1 Samuel chapter 26.
Now the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, Is David not hiding in the hills of Hekeliah opposite Jeshimon? Then Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. and Saul encamped in the hill of Hekeliah which is opposite Jeshamon by the road. But David stayed in the wilderness and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. David therefore sent out spies and understood that Saul had indeed come. Next part. So David So David arose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the commander of the army.
Now Saul lay within the camp, and the people encamped all around him. Then David answered and said to Ahimelech, the Hittite, and to Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, brother of Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with you. So David and Abishai came to the people by night, and there Saul lay sleeping within the camp with his spear stuck in the ground by his head.
And Abner and the people lay all around him. Then Abishai said to David, God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore, please let me strike him at once with the spear right to the earth, and I will not have to strike him a second time. But David said to Abishai, do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against Jehovah's anointed and be guiltless? David said, furthermore, as Jehovah lives, Jehovah shall strike him, or his day will come to die, or he will go to battle and perish. Jehovah forbid that I should stretch out my hand against Jehovah's Messiah. But please take now the spear and the jug of water that are by his head, and let us go. So David took the spear and the jug of water by Saul's head, and they got away.
Oh, I can't read if you're doing that. And no man saw or knew it or awoke, for they were all asleep, because deep sleep from Jehovah had fallen on them. Oh, go ahead, David. Don't worry. They'll realize we're in here. Now, go ahead. Now, David. Now David went over the other side and stood upon the top of a hill afar off, a great distance being between them. And David called out to the people and to Abner, son of Ner, saying, Do you not answer, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who are you calling out to the king? So David said to Abner, Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel?
Why then have you not guarded your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy your lord the king. The thing that you have done is not good. As the lord lives, you deserve to die, because you have not guarded your master the lord's anointed. Now see where the king's spear is, and the jug of water that was by his head." Then Saul knew David's voice and said, Is that your voice? My son David? David said, it is my voice, my lord, O king. And he said, why is my lord thus pursue his servant?
For what have I done? Or what evil is in my hand? Now therefore, please let my lord, the king, hear the words of his servant. If the lord has stirred you up against me, let him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, may they be cursed before the lord. For they have driven me out of this day from sharing in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Go, serve other gods. So now do not let my blood fall on the earth before the face of the Lord. For the king of Israel has come out to seek a fleet, as when one hunts a partridge in the mountains.
Then Saul said, I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will harm you not, or harm you no more, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Indeed, I have played the fool and exceedingly erred. And David answered and said, here's the king's spear.
Let one of the young men come over and get it. May the Lord repay every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness. But the Lord delivered you into my hand today. But I would not stretch out my hand against the Lord's anointed. And indeed, as your life was valued much in this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued much in the eyes of the Lord. And let him deliver me out of all tribulation. Then Saul said to David, May you be blessed, my son David. You shall both do great things and also shall prevail. So David went on his way and Saul returned to his place. All right. So we need to ask ourselves, A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize? And C, what are we called to do? All right. What's this about? It's about David's spares his life. Who's his? David spares Saul's life again even though Abishai is like dude kill him kill him and David's like he's God's Messiah I can't do that instead what's he do?
Yeah, take the water and the spear, right? So, incontroversial evidence that they had been in the camp and been that close to the king. And so, interestingly, it seems like Saul... Hold on, bud. We're almost done. It seems like Saul repents. And so, B, best first, what would you underline as best first there? Probably 21. Verse 21. Interesting, yeah, I have... Oh, you want to put that on the previous page? Thank you. I have, what verse is that? Can't see past your hand. 19 and 20 underlined in my book. Or 22. You have 21 and 23? Yeah, 21 and 23.
Okay. So what do you think you're called to do in this scenario? Are you supposed to sneak into your enemy's camp and steal their water jug? No. Oh, you're called to take your 3,000 men and go on a bloodthirsty hunt to kill someone. No. Oh, you're supposed to take a nap. Show Grace to, um, like, even if somebody's trying to kill you, you don't just kill them in innocent blood, like in Yeah, right, so political assassination type stuff.
Yeah, right. That's not righteousness. Good. Because if David had killed Saul, do you think people would have really wanted him as king? Yeah, all right, so his throne is established in righteousness. Righteousness and justice, good. I think about this and in my mind, it immediately draws me to the most righteous and justice throne that's ever existed. And whose would that be? Jesus. Jesus, right. For all that might be good of David, we still find faults. For anything that's decent in soul, we find him lacking. But who do we not find lacking or faulting?
God. Yeah, specifically our Lord Jesus Christ, right? Yep. Yep. So, alright, well, let's go ahead and pray. God, we thank you for giving us time together in your word. And we pray that you would please help us to Follow Jesus, the King of righteousness and glory. And we pray that you would please let us be servants who walk in righteousness because you have given us your spirit and your righteousness in Jesus' name. Amen. Can you say all done? All done.
