1 Samuel 2:22-36

Okay, so we are in 1st Samuel. 1st Samuel is in the Old Testament. So, after Ruth and after Judges, Judges, Ruth, 1st Samuel. We're in 1st Samuel chapter 2. We're going to finish up chapter 2. So, Samuel's mom is named Hannah. And Hannah, she wasn't able to have a baby, and she prays to God to give her a baby, and God hears this prayer for a baby, and then she gives the baby on loan to the Lord to work in the tabernacle. That baby's name is Samuel. So we're on 2 Samuel chapter 2. Chapter 2? Chapter 2. So I've read all this, so now we're going to be all the way down at verse 22. Okay, 22 All right. So first Samuel chapter 2 beginning of verse 22.
So good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions Eli's got some wicked sons and Samuel's growing up. So we're gonna find out what the Lord does about Eli's sons Let's have some coffee. We'll pray. We'll get into God's Word It's a hot it's pretty warm Just a second. God, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for your word. We pray that you would please help us to understand your word, that you would teach us to walk in your ways, and that we would love you forever. In Jesus' name, Amen. Alright, you want to start reading verse 22?
Now Eli was very old, and he had heard everything his sons did. He had doomed all Israel. and how they lay with the woman who assembled at the door of the tabernacle of meeting him. So he said to them, why do you do such things? For I hear of you, your evil dealings from all All the people, now my sons, for it is not a good report that I hear you make the Lord's people transgress if one man sins against who will endure. Well, if one man sins against another, God will judge him. But if a man sins against the Lord, who will intercede for him, nevertheless, as they did not heed the voice of the Father, because the Lord desire to kill them and the children the child of samuel no the child samuel grew in the in stature and in favor both both with the lord and men all right whoo those boys are eli you don't i don't think they're very good are they no they're sleeping with all the women coming to the tabernacle i think they're kind of cool Yeah, so even Eli's like, look, you sinned against a person, right? Maybe God can judge between you, but you sinned against God. You got a big problem. But Samuel? Samuel's in stature. Samuel's growing in stature and favor with both God and people. Samuel also had stature in God and people. Yeah. All right. I'm going to finish it up.
And did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire? Why do you kick at my sacrifice and my offering, which I have commanded in my dwelling place, and honor your sons more than me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Therefore, Jehovah God of Israel says, I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before me forever. But now, the Lord says, far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. Behold, the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father's house, so that there will not be an old man in your house, and you will see an enemy in my dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. and there shall not be an old man in your house forever but any of your men whom I do not cut off from my altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart and all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age now this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons on Hophni and Phineas and one day they shall die both of them Then I will raise up for myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. I will build him a secure house and he shall walk before my anointed forever. And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread and say, please put me in one of the priestly portions that I may eat a piece of bread.
I bet Samuel, who does it? Well, it's interesting because yes, Samuel ends up becoming, acting like a priest, but guess what? Jesus. He says that this is going to be somebody who's walked before my anointed forever. Guess what happens to Samuel? He dies. He dies. And guess what happens to his sons? He dies. They're wicked and the people don't want his sons to rule them.
I don't think it's ultimately talking about Samuel. We can just jump to see Christ, and I think this is talking about Jesus, our high priest. But Samuel is a statue of God, Jesus. Ah, that's right. So he's a type of Christ. A type meaning like he points us to a bigger fulfillment of it. But it sums up with... Yeah, it's kind of sad about that, huh? Well, let's go ahead and talk about it. A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? So what do you think this is about?
I think it's about Eli's sons who are being horrible and Jesus is going to raise up a new king, a new priest. He needs to rule all the priests. Okay, yeah, so Eli's sons are going to be killed. They disdain the Lord. God had been merciful and gracious, but he's going to judge them. Yeah, he's eventually going to die.
Yeah, so that line of the priest is going to be done. There's going to have to be a different family line from Aaron to be the priest, right? Well, it's Samuel's fault then. Well, interesting, Samuel, I don't think is from the tribe of Aaron. Yeah, but he becomes priest next. We'll talk about that a little bit later. So, this is one of those areas where, what's this about?
Well, this is God's prophesying judgment against Eli's sons. Now, we'll see if that actually happens, but God makes judgments and he makes promises, doesn't he? Yeah, so in my Bible, I have verse 26 underlined about Samuel growing in stature and in favor with the Lord and before men.
And then I also have verse 33 and 34, but especially verse 34. Now this shall be a sign to you that I will come upon your two sons on Hophni and Phinehas, and one day they shall die, both of them. Where is Reinhold? I want to underline two. When Samuel goes in the stature and also... Yeah, verse 26. That's what I did too. I don't see it, but when he says, hooray, a new priest. Oh, yeah. So that's verse 35. Yeah, good. Good. All right. So what is this? So we've talked already about how this points us to Christ, but how does it change you? How does it call you to live? What's the C calling, call to action?
Obey God. Don't treat them like a piece of dirt. Okay. Also. So we can learn from like the counterexample of Eli's sons. No. Well, yeah. Right. We can say like, well, we should not act like that. Yeah. Should not. Yeah. Cause God hates that type of behavior. we can and take example of Samuel and not of his sons. Not of his sons and Eli's sons.
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. We can pray that the Lord would let us grow in wisdom and in stature and in favor with the Lord. We could treat God as holy. And not be like Eli's sons. Yeah. I think there's a lesson for me as well with being a dad. I may reprimand a child, but if I'm not Like restraining you guys? Is that very good?
Nope. No, because Eli doesn't take them out of the priesthood. He says, you shouldn't be doing that. You shouldn't be doing that. But he keeps letting them do it. That's why he wanted to take them out because they're hurting God's people. Yeah, they're hurting God's people and thus even transgressing against God himself. All right, you ready to pray? Yep.
