1 Samuel 2:1-11

We are at 1st Samuel chapter 2. 1st Samuel chapter 2, the first 11 verses. Hannah's got a song. She's had the baby. She's brought him to the tabernacle. And now we're going to find out Hannah's song. So, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions. This is where every morning you and I, we get together, we get into God's word, and we grow in our love for the Lord together. Together. And we're working sequentially or chronologically through a bunch of historical books and prophets. So, let's have some coffee. We'll pray. We'll get into God's word. It's kind of lukewarm at this point. You don't want any? Not like lukewarm. Yeah. That it is Jesus. He spits it out of his mouth. You don't You know that verse in Revelation? Yeah. You should be either hot or cold. So, at the judgment day, if you're neither if you're not hot, split you out of your mouth, out of his mouth. So, okay. Uh, let's pray. God, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the blessing of getting to spend time together. We thank you for your word. And we pray now for your Holy Spirit to help us. Help us, Lord, to understand, to believe, and to live. We need your help, Lord. In Jesus's name. Amen. All right, here we go. Man, that sun came through really bright all of a sudden, huh? 2 Samuel chapter 2, beginning at verse one. I'll let you start. We'll just go back and forth. Okay. And Hannah prayed and said, "My heart rejoices in the Lord. My horn is exalted in the Lord. I smile at my enemies because I rejoice in your salvation." She's got a horn. She like a unicorn. It's a metaphor. What's it a metaphor for? It's for her honor, right? Yeah. So, she had an adversary. her adversary. It was Elcana's other wife who was constantly making fun of her for not being able to have a baby. No one is holy like Yhovah, for there is none beside you, nor is there any rock like our God. Do verse three. So, we're just going to go back and forth like that. Okay. Talk no more so very proudly. Let no arrogance come from your mouth. For the Lord is the God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, and those who stumbled are girded with strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, and the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, and she who has many children has become feeble. What? What are you talking about? It's just like she was um like like the other wife was like making fun of her cuz she couldn't have any kids and now she has a kid. Yeah. Now she's like, "Haha, look what the Lord's done for me." Right. Okay. Want to read verse six. The Lord kills and makes alive. He brings down to the grave and brings up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich. He brings low and lifts up. He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the beggar from the ash sheep to set them among princes and make them inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the lords, and he has set the world upon them. He will guard the feet of his saints, but the wicked shall be silent in darkness. For by strength no man shall prevail. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken in pieces. From heaven, he will thunder against them. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. I will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed. He will give strength to the king. To his king. Yeah. Then Elana went to his house at Rama. But the child ministered to the Lord before Eli the priest. Okay. So they leave, right? Connor goes home as the husband. He goes home and he leads the baby with Eli or the boy with Eli. And so what's this section about? Um Hannah is singing to God. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. And what's what do you think is if as you're trying to summarize and think about what kind of the the main themes of this song are, what would you say? What are the main themes to summarize this song? Um, my honor is exalted. Okay. So, she has honor again, right? I think part of is like the reversal of things, right? uh that the barren list now have children, but those who were rich and had children are now feeble. Right? He he's those who were were weak, he's made strong, and those who were mighty, he's brought low, right? It's about like God turning things on its head, right? And why does she have confidence about these types of things? What did you say? Why does she have confidence about these things? Um, I'm just going to say look at verse two. That's what I have starred. I have it more than underlined. I have it starred in my Bible because because of the Lord. Yeah. No one is holy like Jehovah. For there is none beside you, nor is there any rock like our God. And so she's going to talk about what what the type of fortress god she has, right? the one that's able to do these amazing things. No one else is holy like him. She's so excited about God and what he's done and how he's heard her prayers. And so she's she's going to sing his praises. She's thankful to him for all of his good deeds. So, all right, I've already uh chosen my best verse, verse two. What would you underline for you as the best verse that you would underline to summarize this section? Probably four and five. Four and five. Okay. Yeah. Probably because of the whole giving children type thing. Good. All right. Let's go ahead and go to C. Calling. What are we called to do? Every time your brother gets in trouble when he was the one who was instigating the trouble, you're going to sing a song to God. No one is holy like my God. He's my rock and he's the one who has avenged me and brought justice. Uh, I guess you could do that. Guess you could. What does this call you to do and how does it point you to Jesus Christ? Um, to know that God will take care of everything. Yeah, that's a great that's a great comfort, right? God's going to take care of everything. Even when things seem to be going wrong, God's going to take care of everything. I think this points me to Jesus Christ because it's Jesus who flipped the world on his head. Did you know that was the accusation that they brought against Christians? They're turning the whole world on its head, right? The poor are exalted. The righteous are told to repent. Slaves are told they're free. They're turning the world on its head. It's true. And I love the last part. I I actually have this start as well. Uh in the last uh part of verse 10, he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed. Right. I think this is talking about what's this little Samuel is eventually going to do. He's going to anoint even David. He's going to anoint David as the king. And that that king is eventually going to have a son and that son, a son, and that son, a son, and that sonah. till you get 28 generations later according to Matthew although it's got not exactly a full lineage but tokus to Jesus the son of David the anointed king so the only thing I'm I'm confused about is it says like even the baron has born seven but like she's only had one late and later you find out she only has five other kids. Mhm. Yeah. So, seven is a picture of perfection. Oh, so it's not it's not like necessarily mathematical, but it's also um when you're in song poetry, you can use illustrative language, right? So, it's it's not saying that she literally has seven children. She's saying God has God has filled the barren woman, right? uh like if you if you really want to be careful about reading Hebrew or any poetry with straight literalness because the issue is then you end up with like go to Song of Solomon and like her teeth are like shorn sheep with none missing her tower is like a tower of Silomme hold you really think that Solomon thinks his wife looks like she's got goat eyes or dove eyes and goat teeth? No. Right. It's it's illustrative material. So, yeah. Good question, though. Good. All right. You ready to pray? Lord, we do thank you that you control and everything and you care for us. Even when there's there really are difficult, challenging, hard things in life. Lord, we can trust you. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for Hannah to have so desperately prayed for this child and then to leave the baby with Eli. But yet we see here her amazing faith in you. What a beautiful song that Hannah has given us of knowing that you are the rock and there is no one like you. You are holy. God, please let us trust in you and walk in your ways.
