1 Samuel 18:1-16

Hey, good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at 1 Samuel chapter 18 verses 1 through 16. We're going to find out a little bit about how things keep going for David when he's with King Saul. He's defeated Goliath, but not everything's so hunky-dory. So let's have some coffee. We'll pray. We're getting God's word. Is it hot? It's lukewarm. Not as hot as I'd like it. Just a sip, just a sip. All right, let's go.
Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the blessing it is that we get to spend time in your word. Lord, we know that we may have many things to do and our hearts can come heavy to your word at times, even reluctantly, but we thank you for the gift it is and the grace it is to get to read your word and pray that you would please help us in Jesus's name. Amen.
Here we go. First Corinthians, first Corinthians, first Samuel chapter 18. You want to read the first paragraph? Sure. Now when he had finished speaking, he saw the soul of him. The soul of Jonathan. Jonathan. Why don't you put your finger underneath where you're reading. Jonathan was kinned. Knit. Knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Soul, yeah. You want to keep reading? Okay. Saul took him that day and would not let him go home to his father's house anymore. So the paragraph, see where it ends? So you'll stop reading when you get to that.
Then Jonathan and David made a covenant because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David with his armor, even to his own sword and his bow and his belt. Okay, so what happens there? Jonathan basically likes David so much he gives him his stuff. Yeah. Have you had friends like that before? You love them so much that you gave them your pocket knives and give them your stuff? Yeah. Yeah. Right. That happens. Okay.
So David went over. Sorry, so David went out wherever Saul sent him and behaved wisely and Saul sent him over the men of war and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants. Now it had happened as they were coming home when David was returning from the slaughter of the Philistine that the women had come out of all the cities of Israel singing and dancing to meet King Saul with tambourines with joy and with musical instruments so the women sang as they danced and said Saul has slain his thousands and David his tens of thousands then Saul was very angry And the saying displeased him. And he said, They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed only thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom? So saw I to David from that day forward. All right, you want to read verse 10 and 11? It's like, oh, go ahead and let the spank off. Well, but it's more like jealousy. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Go ahead. Verse 10 and 11.
And it happened on the next day that the distressing spirit from God came upon Saul and his prophets inside the house from So David played music with his hand, as at other times. But there was a spear in Saul's hand. And Saul cast the spear, for he said, I will pin David to the wall. But David escaped his presence twice. Oh boy. So this distressing, this evil spirit comes back on Saul and what happens? I really don't want to get pinned to the wall. And Saul takes his spear, his javelin type thing, throws it as hard as he can, trying to pin David to the wall.
Now Saul was afraid of David because Jehovah was with him, but had departed from Saul. Therefore Saul removed him from his presence and made him his captain over a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people. And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and Jehovah was with him. Therefore when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, He was afraid of him. But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.
All right. So what does Saul do after David escapes and throwing the javelin twice? Tear it off. All right. You put him in charge of the army. What might happen to this dude? Yeah, right. He could die in battle. Would that get rid of his problem? And so, but does David die? Never. He goes out, he comes in, he goes out, he comes in, and he's kept safe somehow. How is David kept safe?
Because of Jesus Christ. Because the Lord is with him, right? Yeah. So what would you say in one sentence this is all about, this section? I think it's about Saul having jealousness over David and the spirit of Saul, the spirit of the Lord departing from him and going into David. Yeah, right. So I think the spirit had been with Saul in a special way to give him leadership and things like this.
So basically Saul's going off his rock also. Yeah, he's going off his rocker, right? Yeah. But the point being, right, God's favor is not with him anymore. And instead it goes to David. So I would say the paranoia and downfall of Saul and the raising up of David. Sound good? Also, Jonathan being his father. Jonathan being his friend. Oh, yeah, we forgot about Jonathan being his friend.
That's a big deal, right? Because eventually Jonathan is even going to abdicate his role. So he's going to give it up because he thinks that David should be king. And also, Saul doesn't want to kill David because then everybody will be like, come on. And then also Jonathan will be super mad.
Yes. In my Bible, I have verse 14, 15, and 16. That's what I would underline. I would probably do four and five. and five let's see four and five were about Jonathan taking it off oh okay and then Saul David went out wherever Saul sent him but he was like okay yeah good verses. All right so what do you think this is C calling us to do?
Are you supposed to pick to pick up your spear when you get mad and try to pin your brother and sister to the wall? I think I might go to jail. Maybe you're supposed to give away all your knives to your best friend. Give away all your armor. Is that what this is calling you to do? I don't think so. I think it's calling us to not be dumb. What do you mean by that? Like, Saul kept trying to destroy David, but David had God's spirit with him. Okay. Yeah, right. It's kind of hard to fight against the Lord. Yeah, never can win. Yeah. Had Saul already been told by Samuel that he was, uh, he wasn't going to have a dynasty that someday God would overthrow him? No. Uh, David will have a big dynasty. Or David would have a big dynasty, but not Saul. God was taking Saul's dynasty away. Right? And so it's going to, instead, it's going to go to David.
But you know who does even better than David? have the seed of David, Jesus himself. And so I think about in this verse where it says that and essentially David had the hearts of all of Judah and Israel because he did everything well. Reminds me of what the people said about Jesus. He does all things well. All right, we can follow our champion. We can follow our victor who's gone out into the battle against even sin and death and won David wasn't perfect at all. No. No, David was not perfect at all.
But you know who is? God. God. Jesus specifically, right? Hey, you want to close us in prayer? Sure. Okay. God, please help that we have a good day today, and please help that we take home what we've learned, and please help that all of us will know that God's Spirit is with them, and that Jesus is Christ.
