1 Corinthians 11:17-34

Welcome to Coffee and devotions is where every day you and I, we get together we get into God's word and we grow in our love for the Lord together in this year 2022. We'll make it from the book of Acts to the book of fire Lehman. Now, just as a way of explanations, some people have said that they really liked the new setup other people said they really miss the bookcases. Just a little bit of background information. So we have four little children, as most of you know, this is Daniel, and this is Ellie, and to be honest with you, I like spending time with them. And so we've actually gotten rid of the internet at our house and I got rid of my smartphone and went back. Yeah. That's right. We have Nathan and Deborah too. And so I went back to a flip phone. whole reason for that nothing was sexual immorality or temptation with anything that way, but actually trying to better use my time. And so the Internet is a place full of articles and wonderful things you can read. And that's great, but it also can be a distraction. So we change the setup. And so I can't do it at my house anymore. Because it's a choice. I want to I wanted to spend more time with these guys, but I'm still committed to coming and meeting with you every morning. So with that said, why don't we have some coffee? I'm gonna get my coffee here and your net here, right? We didn't bring you guys tea. Maybe we could have water may have been okay, you guys ready to pray? Let's pray. God, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the blessing of being able to read your Bible. And we pray that as we read it, that you would care for us and bless us. Please teach us Lord in Jesus's name, Amen. Okay, we're at first Corinthians chapter 11. First Corinthians chapter 11. And this is a very familiar passage to most of you first Corinthians. Chapter 11. And will begin at verse 17. Now in giving these instructions, I do not praise you, since you come together, not for the better, but for the worse. Do you guys think he's going to say that they're doing things well or that they need to change? Chain? That's right. For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and there are divisions among you and in part I believe it, for there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you. Therefore, when you come together in one place, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper. For an eating each one takes his own supper ahead of others. And one is hungry, and another is drunk. What? Do you not have houses to eat and drinking? Or do you despise the Church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say? Shall I praise you in this? I do not praise you. So they're coming together. And they're eating a meal that they're eating? They're taking the Lord's Supper, and guess what? Some people are bringing food and they get to eat lots and lots and lots of food. Is that is that kind of fun? When you get to eat a good meal? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. That's, that's nice. But then there's other people who come and they have like, very little food. And they're really hungry. did not run. That's not fun. That's right. And guess what? The people have lots of food. They don't want to share any with the people who have a little bit of food. And some people brought so much wine, that they're even drunk. Is that good? No, he says this isn't good. I can't praise you for this. For I received that which the Lord or sorry I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread. And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, Take eat. This is my body which is broken. For you knew this and remembrance of me. In the same manner, he also took the cup after supper saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup. you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. Have you guys heard daddy read this before? Yeah, yeah. When do you when have you heard me read this before? A bunch of times, like when we do communion? Yeah, right. This is this is what's called the institution of the Lord's Supper. Yeah, he's telling us this is what Jesus said. Therefore, verse 27, ready. Therefore whoever eats this bread, or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. Boy so if you come to communion, and you take communion, you know the the bread and the wine and you take that in an unworthy way. It means you're going to be guilty. Like that guy. But let a man examine himself. So let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner, eats and drinks judgment to himself by not discerning the Lord's body. It's at this point, I'd like to stop and say I love my children. But I don't think Ellie can follow these commands perfectly. But let a man examine himself and so let him eat the bread and drink the cup. For he who eats and drinks unworthy, in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself not discerning the Lord's body. I love these guys. But I don't think that they're able to examine themselves quite yet. And so this is one of the reasons why we wait until we think children are spiritually mature enough to be able to examine themselves and make that determination before they take the Lord's Supper. But we don't want to take the Lord's Supper in a Cavalier, way, or a way that we don't actually examine ourselves. Question our hearts look at our lives. For this reason why for this reason, verse 30, yeah, for this reason, many are weak and sick. Among you and many sleep. Did you hear that? What do you think he's saying there? Yeah, he's saying, Do you know what that means? For many to sleep? They've died. Oh, god. Yeah. Many people have taken the Lord's Supper. And they didn't actually think about Jesus. They didn't think about their sins. They didn't think about how they need to live at peace with all men. They didn't think about how they need to not be gluttons and selfish and for this reason, some people are getting sicker and sicker and some people have even died. Right. I one time you've been sick one time. Oh, six. Yeah, you've been sick sick a few times. Yeah, but thankfully not recently. But the point is, is that we have to be careful when we take the Lord's Supper. For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world. Right? Would we rather be judged by Jesus now and him tell us we need to repent from our sins. Or would we rather be judged by God at the end of the world and be thrown into hell? No. No, we would rather be judged by God right now. And believe what He says right now. Therefore, my brethren when you come together to eat, wait for one another. But if anyone is hungry, let them eat at home. Less you come together for judgment. And the rest I will set an order when I come. Okay, good. You think that's good? Well, I think the heart of this if I was to underline a passage for what this is the best verse for this. I think I would probably underline verses 27 and 28. Maybe I'd underline that whole section through 32. What would you what would you underline in your Bible is the best verse to summarize us. Last see calling. Oh, yawns last see calling what are we called to do in response to these words, well? Do you come to the Lord's Supper in a way that you're actually examining your heart? Or do you come to the Lord's Supper in a way that you are? Just doing whatever you want? Are you coming to the Lord's Supper as a penitent person who needs the mercy of God? Or are you coming to the Lord's Supper? Assuming God's grace Do you rightly discern the body and blood of Jesus Christ? Do you understand that the Passover lamb had to be slain for your sins? Do you grieve over your sin? Do you hate your sin? Do you love Christ? Do you examine yourself? Do you love your brethren who around you? Do you love the people in the church? Maybe you're one of those who's fallen into this trap of thinking that somehow this is all about church. Division, and not about actually judging your heart and examining yourself. And so you've started to think maybe I should give Communion to infant children and stuff like that. I encourage you to deal honestly with the texts. And ask yourself, though, I do not want to hinder the these little ones to come to Him. Are we letting our Covenant Theology I would say Eric Covenant Theology, get in front of what the Bible actually says here. Because little ones, this applies to also if they're to take they're also to examine themselves. Not sure if they would have been done yet. Let's go ahead and pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Lord, we pray that we would grieve over our sins that Your Holy Spirit would convict us of our guilt, and that you would be producing in us the fruits of righteousness. Please God help us to follow after you. Please let us rejoice when we come to your table. Knowing that our joy is in you, in Jesus's name, Amen. Are you gonna pull this up?
