How Will They Remember You?

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we're going to be at 1 Chronicles chapter 7, verses 30 through 40, asking, what about the family of Asher?

So, we've got the genealogy of Asher today. Let's go ahead and have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll talk about this family.

Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for your word. We thank you for the ways in which your Holy Spirit is working in our hearts and lives.

And Father, please, teach us. God, teach us the history of these things, but also teach us how we should live. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Alright, here we go. 1 Chronicles chapter 7, beginning at verse 30.

The sons of Asher were Imna, Ishva, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister, Sarah.

The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malkiel, who was the father of Berziath.

And Heber begot Jephle, Shomer, Hotham, and their sister, Shua.

The sons of Jephle, Jephle, Jephle, were Pasach, Bimol, and Ashvath.

These were the children of Japheth.

The sons of Shemir were Ahi, Ruggah, Jehovah, and Aram.

And the sons of his brother, Helem, were Zophah, Imna, Shilesh, and Amal.

The sons of Zophah were Shua, Suha, Harnifer, Shual, Beri, Imra, Bezer, Hod, Shama, Shilsha, Jithron, and Berah.

The sons of Jether were Jephuneh, Pizpah, and Ara.

The sons of Ullah were Ara, Haniel, and Rizia.

All these were the children of Asher, heads of their father's houses,

choice men, mighty men of valor, chief leaders.

And they were recorded by genealogies among the army fit for battle.

Their number was 26,000.

We need to ask ourselves, A, what is this about?

B, what's the best verse to summarize this?

And C, what are we called to do?

So what is this about?

This is the genealogy of the family of Asher.

Now, it's interesting because this tribe of Asher, where they're mainly finding these documents,

they're finding them not in census records, but they're actually finding them in army documents.

So, did you notice that?

And they were recorded by genealogies among the army fit for battle.

Their number was 26,000, right?

So, genealogy was about how many fighting men there were.

Now, I kind of made that difference between the census and that,

but maybe that's not a fair recommendation because the main reason to take,

or one of the big reasons to take that type of census is to find out how many fighting men you had, right?

I think that's one of the reasons why David gets in trouble for taking a census or impartial census elsewhere.

We'll get there later.

But the point being is, there's this family of Asher,

and it speaks of them, right?

They're choice men, mighty men of valor, chief leaders.

Now, we've not gotten this type of language for a couple of, since we were at the family of, what was it?

Yeah, Benjamin, right?

Men of valor, men of valor, men of valor.

We've kind of skipped over a few tribes since then,

and so does that indicate to us that maybe not everybody was as active in the military conquest,

or active in the military period?

I can't answer that, but all I know is that that's how it's describing these men of Asher.

And so, the best verse to underline is, I'm going to say, verse 30.

The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishva, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister, Sera.

It's just interesting that Sera, S-E-R-A-H, here, is mentioned in the genealogy, right?

We had the daughters of Zileophad mentioned, but that was kind of an odd case,

but here we actually have one of the daughters mentioned amongst the sons.

So, for what reason?

Probably because she was a notable figure.

Made an impression on people.

So, that's what this is about.

B, we've already done best verse, so now we're at C, calling.

What are we called to do?

What are we, where do we find Jesus Christ?

Or even, where's the covenant of grace, right?

So, our C can be those three different things.

Calling, Christ, covenant of grace.

Well, here I'm going to go, once again, to covenant of grace and calling, right?

What are we called to do?

Covenant of grace is still, God is the one who made promises.

God is keeping his promises.

Here's the family of Asher.

There are 26,000 fighting men in the army, right?

That's a huge number.

It's not a small thing.

So, this is, praise God.

He's faithful to his promises.

And so, we can take heart.

We can be, we can rejoice in the Lord that he is good to us in those ways.

And he's always good, keeping his promises.

But we can also go to calling.

And the calling here isn't just, I'm just not talking about somehow, you know, a type of moralism that I'm going to just flop on top of the scriptures here.

All right, I want to encourage you.

Would people be able to say to you that you are a man of valor, a chief leader, a choice man?

Would you be named amongst, like, a daughter of Sura?

When people remember you, the content of your character, what are they going to remember?

That you were a scoundrel?

That you were a slave to sin?

That you were self-seeking, self-serving, drunken?

Or, will they remember you?

Like the men and women I remember who were godly.

And I think about them even so now.

I've got them in my mind's eye right now.

People that showed me what it looked like to sacrificially love their wives.

To lead their homes in love and gentleness.

Will you follow in those footsteps of those women who were so faithful, so serving, so humble and meek, gentle, and yet had a sense of dignity about them?

That nobody could strip away from them because they knew their worth because they were daughters of the king.

How do you live your life?

How do you live your life?

How will people remember you?

Well, I hope that as you dwell in Jesus Christ, as you embrace who you are in Jesus, that the Spirit will help you live a rich life.

Well, let's pray.

Father, I pray that you would please work in our hearts that we might be your people.

That we might live lives worthy of the calling that you have given us.

Lord, we pray that you would please help us to walk in your ways and follow you.

You truly are a wonderful and good God.

Lord, give us your Spirit.

We don't have the strength by ourselves, but we know that you are able.

So, God, please, please strengthen our hands.

Care for us, Lord, we pray in Jesus' name.

Amen.
