Gad’s Warriors: Trust God in the Battle

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are going to be talking about the genealogy of the tribe of Gad.

So let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll talk about this Transjordan warrior class type tribe.

Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you for the blessing, the benefit, the joy it is that we get to read your word, but we need your spirit to help us.

So, Father, we pray that your Holy Spirit would teach us, turn us in your ways, help us to understand that we might believe and live.

In Jesus' name, amen. Here we go. 1 Chronicles chapter 5, beginning at verse 11, going through verse 22.

These were the children of Abiah, the son of Jeroah, the son of Jeroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jashishai, the son of Jato, the son of Buzz, Ahai, the son of Abad,

Abdel, the son of Gilead, the son of Gilead, the son of Gilead, the son of Gilead, the son of Gilead, the son of Guni, was chief of their father's house.

And the Gadites dwelt in Gilead, in Bashan and in its villages, and in all the common lands of Sharon within their borders.

All these were registered by genealogies in the days of Jotham, king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam, king of Israel.

The sons of Reuben, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 valiant men, men able to bear shield and sword, to shoot with a bow, and skillful in war, who went to war.

They made war with the Hagorites, Jeter, Nefesh, and Nodab.

And they were helped against them.

And the Hagorites were delivered into their hand, and all who were with them.

For they cried out to God in the battle.

He heeded their prayer, because they put their trust in Him.

Then they took away their livestock, 50,000 of their camels, 250,000 of their sheep, and 2,000 of their donkeys, also 100,000 of their men.

For many fell dead, because the war was God's.

And they dwelt in their place until the captivity.

Well, we need to ask ourselves our three questions.

A, what is this about?

B, what's the best verse to summarize this in?

C, what are we called to do?

So, what is this about?

This is the genealogy of Gad, but remember, this is post-exile, that this is being written.

And so, just after this, right, they dwelt there until the captivity.

So, this is being written at least after the captivity, up to the point of the captivity.

So, Gad, where are they?

Well, they're in Bashan, right?

Og King of Bashan.

They had conquered that land.

They had asked Joshua and Moses to stay on that side.

And they said, yeah, that's fine, but you better go into battle.

They said, oh, yeah, we will.

And as we read in the book of Joshua before, they did go into battle.

Right, they had already had their houses and their pastures and everything, and they left

their women and their children and their cattle at home, and they crossed the Jordan River,

and they went to go fight.

And so, all that is this background history, right?

Gad was strong warriors, 40,760 men, right?

They were sword and shield, and they were going to go to battle, and so they won.

But it's interesting, the tidbit that's here.

And I actually have this underlined in my Bible, which is something that I think is really interesting.

For they cried out to God in the battle.

He heeded their prayer because they put their trust in Him.

So, what is this about?

Well, this is about the tribe of Gad, the descendants of Gad, the sons of Gad.

It even says, Joel was the chief, Shaphim the next, then Jani, then Shaphat, then Bashan,

and their brethren, their father's house, and then it starts listing the names, right?

So, that's what I would underline in my Bible, is verses 11 and 12 and 13, as what this is about.

But there's tidbits of information all throughout that give us context for why is this genealogy being given, right?

The point is that God was with His people, always, but He was blessing His people who believed in Him,

trusted in Him, walked in His ways.

And so, Gad is a nation full of great warriors.

God had been good to His promises, right?

God was faithful.

He gave them the land of Canaan.

He gave them victory in the battle.

And they cried out to Him, right?

And why did He cry out?

Because they trusted in Him.

And so, that's where I'm going to go for C calling.

Do you call upon the name of the Lord Jesus, and do you trust in Him?

As you're going throughout life, do you trust in the Lord?

Do you walk in the ways of King Jesus?

Do you hold to His promises?

Do you cling by faith to what is yours in Christ?

I think that's what we're called to do here, right?

God has all sorts of promises and inheritance for us.

Our inheritance is kept secure and safe in heaven.

This is what 1 Peter tells us, right?

And so, we have this great blessing.

So, the question for you is, do you believe?

Do you walk by faith?

Let's pray.

Father, we thank you so much for the joy of the salvation you have given us in Jesus.

And we pray, God, that you would please give us strength to walk in your ways.

Give us wisdom to do your will.

Lord, we need your spirit.

We believe in you.

Help us when we disbelieve.

Help us walk before you in honor, integrity, truth, righteousness, humility, and joy.

For yours is the victory.

Yours is the battle.

You are the one who gets all the glory.

Thank you for being the champion of our souls.
