We're going to talk about the mighty men of David. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into God's Word.
Let's pray. God, we thank you for your Word. You've given us a perfect and true testimony.
Lord, you have written things down for us to read and to know and to understand.
And so, Father, we pray that we would be able to comprehend and to understand and even to live.
Lord, you are a good God and you care for us. And we thank you for your love and your mercy.
In Jesus' name, amen. Here we go. 1 Chronicles chapter 11, verses 10 through the end of the chapter.
Now, these were the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom,
with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of Jehovah concerning Israel.
And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had.
Jashubim, the son of a Hachamanite, chief of the captains,
he had lifted up his spear against 300, killed by him at one.
Right, at one time.
After him was Eleazar, the son of Dodo, the Ahoahite, who was one of the three mighty men.
He was with David at Pasadamim.
Now there the Philistines were gathered for battle.
And there was a piece of ground full of barley.
So the people fled from the Philistines.
But they stationed themselves in the middle of that field, defended it, and killed the Philistines.
So Jehovah brought about a great victory.
Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David,
into the cave of Adullam.
And the army of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.
David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.
And David said with longing,
Oh, that some would give me a drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate.
So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines,
drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate,
and took it and brought it to David.
Nevertheless, David would not drink it, but poured it out to Jehovah.
And he said, Far be it from me, O my God, that I should do this.
Shall I drink the blood of these men whom you have put their lives in jeopardy?
For at the risk of their lives they brought it.
Therefore he would not drink it.
These things were done by the three mighty men.
Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of another three.
He had lifted up his spear against 300 men, killed them, and won a name among these three.
Of the three, he was more honored than the other two.
Therefore he became their captain.
However, he did not attain to the first three.
Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada,
the son of a valiant man from Kabzil,
who had done many deeds.
He was killed, he had killed two lion-like heroes of Moab.
He also had done, gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.
And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great height, five cubits tall.
In the Egyptian's hand, there was a spear like a weaver's beam.
And he went down to him with a staff, wrestled the spear out of the Egyptian's hand,
and killed him with his own spear.
These things Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, did,
and won a name among the three mighty men.
Indeed, he was more honored than the thirty,
but he did not attain to the first three.
And David appointed him over his guard.
So the mighty warriors were Ashael, the brother of Joab,
Elhanan, the son of Dodo, of Bethlehem,
Shamoth, the Horite,
Helez, the Pelanite,
Ira, the son of Ikesh, the Tekoite,
Abiezer, the Anathothite,
Shebekai, the Hushothite,
Elai, the Ahohite,
Mahari, the Netaphothite,
Heled, the son of Benah, the Netaphothite,
Ethai, the son of Rabai, of Gibeah,
the sons of Benjamin,
Benaiah, the Pirothite, Parothonite,
Hurai, of the brooks of Gaash,
Abiel, the Abarathite,
Amaveth, the Baharumite,
Alihabah, the Shalabanite,
the sons of Heshem, the Gizanite,
Jonathan, the son of Shege, the Harahite,
Ahayim, the son of Sakaar, the Harahite,
Eliphal, the son of Ur,
Hefer, the Makarathite,
Ahijah, the Pelanite,
Hezro, the Carmelite,
Nahari, the son of Izbai,
Joel, the brother of Nathan,
Mibhar, the son of Hagari,
Zelech, the Ammonite,
Nehari, the Barothite,
the armor-bearer of Joab,
the son of Zeruiah,
Ira, the Irathite,
Ithrite,
Gereb, the Ithrite,
Uriah, the Hittite,
Zabab, the son of Alai,
Adina, the son of Sheza,
the Reubenite,
a chief of the Reubenites,
and thirty with him,
Hanan, the son of Makkah,
Josaphat, the Mithnite,
Uzziah, the Ashterthrite,
Shammah and Jeel,
the sons of Hotham,
the Uriahite,
Jediel, the son of Shimri,
and Joah, his brother,
the Tizrite,
Eliel, the Mavite,
Jeribai, the Josheviah,
and Josheviah, the son of Elnam,
Ithma, the Moabite,
Eliel, Obed,
and Jaseel, the Mizobite.
Whew, man, you got all those memorized?
You got them good?
Good.
All right, what is this about, right?
This is David's mighty men.
This is David assembling an army.
This is God bringing people together.
B, what's the best verse?
Well, now these were the mighty men, right?
I would underline verse 10.
I think that's what this is getting at.
Is he calling?
What are we called to do, right?
I think this is God
who is establishing David's throne,
bringing him an army,
bringing him an allegiance,
and God is doing his good work
in David's life.
What are we called to do?
Trust the Lord.
Walk in his ways.
Let's pray.
God, we thank you for this day,
and we pray that we would follow after you
and love you all the days of our life.
You are a good God.
In Jesus' name, amen.
God bless you.
Walk in the peace and grace of Jesus Christ.
I'll see you next time.
Bye.
