If you're wonderful, I think we're just about ready. There we are. Well, good morning. Good morning. Good morning. Welcome to Coffee and devotions is where every day you and I we get together we get the Lord's word and we grow in our love Lord together in this year 2022. We'll make it from the book of Acts to the book of Philemon. So glad to be with you this morning. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray and we'll get into the Lord's word.
Let's pray over the weekend, thank you for your Word. Lord, we thank you that you do not hide hard truths from us.
But that you care for us that you watch over us and that you love us.
Lord, You love us despite arson a pray now that as we read your word that Your Holy Spirit would give us sobriety that we might understand it. In Jesus's name Amen. Here we go. We're at Romans chapter three verses one through eight. Romans chapter three verses one through eight. What advantage then has the Jew or what is the prophet of circumcision? Much in every way, chiefly, because to them were committed the oracles of God. And what if some did not believe? Well, their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? Certainly not. Indeed, let God be true and every man a liar as it is written, that you may be justified in your words and may overcome when you are judged. But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? Speak as a man? Certainly not. For then how will God judge the world for if the truth of God has increased through my lie to his glory? Why am I also still judged as a sinner? And why not say let us do evil? That good may come as we are slanderously reported as some affirm that we say their condemnation is just Well, that's a difficult passage. This is a this is a difficult passage that we have to work through. And so we need to ask ourselves, what's this about? What's the best verse to summarize this? And what are we called to do in response to these words, right, so So, what is Paul going with this? He's talked about the Gentiles in their sin verses in chapter one, verses 18 through the end of the chapter, and then he kind of put all of Israel under condemnation to not kind of he really did in chapter two. So he's following up from that and verse one, he says, What advantage then has to do or what profit of what's the profit of circumcision, right? Okay. So if, if Jews and Gentiles are both under condemnation if both are sinners, well, then don't we have a problem? What what's what's the point of why do you gotta do any of this then?
It's what you had the oracles of God. Right, hold on here. seasame. Chiefly, because two of them were committed the oracles of God, right.
You had the prophecies. They spoke to you about Christ. They spoke to you about the word of God. You had all promises. Right? Everything that the Lord had delivered was given over to the Jews. And so there's a lot of profit there. He says, The next question is in verse three. For what if some did not believe right okay. So, you have to realize Paul is having this kind of dialogue, right and scholars will call this as interlocked tour, right his his conversation partner here is is saying for what is some didn't believe right so what is there some Jews in the they had the oracles of God but they didn't believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? No, no, God is faithful, no matter what God God is faithful. And we're going to, he's going to flesh that out more for us and chapters, the rest of Chapter Three into chapter four and into chapter five. But he says, Indeed, let God be true. And every man will all lie, right. We'll proceed though the mouth of God is righteous because he is righteous. And so he is saying that as it is written, that you may be justified by your words and may overcome when you are judged. But he says, Okay, so there's a problem then. Okay, so if, if God is true, even if I'm a sinner, then why don't I just go on sinning? Right? That's, that's a question that goes on from this. But if our unrighteousness demonstrates God's righteousness, right, so if I'm a sinner, and you're able to look at me, but then you look at God and you're able to say, Oh, he's totally unlike us, because he's totally righteous, then you know, should I just keep on sinning? Right, which are you saying? Is God unjust, who inflicts wrath right if if he's, if if me being a sinner, and him being righteous, if those two are are in place, then isn't he unjust to judge me? Certainly not. Right? May it never be. Let us do good that evil may should we do? Good that evil may come? said, No. No. God is going to judge the world. He is a righteous God. Now I know we might have this problem. We might have this problem a little bit as we think about the logic of what's going on. Here. But I interact with this all the time when I talk to non believers. As I talk to non Christians, they talk about how they just well, okay, if that's my son, that's my son. You know, and they, and I guess God is just going to judge and I'm just going to keep on doing myself because nothing I could do about it anyways, certainly not hold on here. God is going to judge he takes it seriously. So the question is, how do we come into a right relationship with Him? And that's where Paul's really driving us from there's a danger here what we're doing you know, we're taking small chunk by small chunk by small chunks, but he read Romans really is one whole book and it was meant to be read. First letter the last letter as one whole book. So I'm gonna skip skip ahead here a little bit, and God is just and God is faithful. And he is, he was showing us here that everyone is under the condemnation of sin, all humanity, and when it gets really bad in the next section, where he's really going to drive this to the point but God's judgment is a key part of our salvation. See, because when we understand how great of sinners we are, and how righteous God is it makes His mercy and His grace, that much sweeter to us. We actually understand that we've been saved by grace through faith will actually understand that this is how God demonstrates His own love for us. In that while we were in this state as sinners, Christ died for us. This is the beauty of the Christian gospel. What's what's the best verse to summarize this?
Well, I think in I think, verse eight is really kind of eight, seven and eight is kind of getting at the heart of it. You know, for if the truth of God has increased through my lie to his glory, why am I also still judged a sinner? And why not say let us do evil that good may come. As we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm, we say, their condemnation is just right. What's he saying? He I think that's kind of getting at the heart here. He's saying some people are laying this out to Christians feet. They're saying they become antinomian. Right. All right. We just got to sin and sin and sin because grace is going to abound. Be careful. I've met Christians who fall into that trap. I mean, that's really getting at the heart here and this is where I'm going to leave us with our C calling. What are you called to do in response to this? If we love God, and we understand our sin, and that all of us are under his condemnation and wrath, then we'll run to Him because He freely offers to us, Jesus Christ. And if that's the case, and if we truly love Christ, we will keep His commandments. Because we love Christ, because now we are lovers. Of righteousness. Now because we are trying to earn his love, but because He has loved us, so brother and sister, pursue holiness, out of a heart of love. Let's pray. Father, we thank you for this day. We thank You for Your Word. We thank you that you do not hide hard things from us. And we pray that we would follow after you and faithfulness in Jesus's name. Amen. Well, may the Lord bless you today. May you walk in the joy and peace of Jesus Christ? May you always abound in his love and walk in his ways. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye
