Jonah 2

if we've not been in Jeremiah for a while. So Jeremiah and then we're going to go into the minor prophets. Ezekiel back in Zephaniah. These are in the minor prophets. These are in minor prophets. There we go. Jonah, Micah. There we go. Jonah chapter 2. All right. So Jonah, what's happened yesterday in Jonah chapter 1 is he was uh thrown into the sea and immediately became calm. Right. So now we're at Jonah chapter uh well we'll start at chapter 1 verse1 17. So right up here and we'll read through chapter 2. All right. So let's have some coffee. We'll pray. Well good morning. Good morning. Welcome to coffee and devotions. Uh we're going to read Jonah chapter 2 and find out about what happens to Jonah once he's thrown off the ship. So let's have some coffee. We'll pray. We'll get into God's word. Is it hot? That's warm. All right, that's that's good. Don't do that. Don't do that. I need to You get a sip of coffee, not drink all my coffee. All right, let's pray. God, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for your word. Thank you for time together. Thank you for the blessing that we have of getting to read your word. And we pray that your spirit would work in our hearts, that we would read it, understand it, and that we would live it. We pray in Jesus's name. Amen. Living it the hard part. Well, believing is the impossible part. Only God can make us do that. Living it is really hard. Yeah. Really hard. We need God's help with that, too. All right. You want to read verse 17? Now the Lord had prepared a great fe fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. The Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish's belly. So what happened to Jonah? got swallowed by a giant fishy. A whale? No, not a whale. Yeah, we don't. It just says a fish. A mega fish. All right. So, it could be like a a whale as big as a whale or something else. Fish as big as a whale or a whale as big as a fish. All right. Well, here's what Jonah said. I cried out to the Lord because of my afflictions. And he answered me, "Out of the belly of shield I cried, and you heard my voice, for you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the floods surrounded me. All your billows and waves passed over me." Then I said, "I have been cast out of your sight. Yet I will look again toward your holy temple." The water surrounded me, even to my soul. The deep closed around me. Weeds were wrapped around my head. I went down to the moorings of the mountains. The earth with its bars closed behind me forever. Yet you have brought up my life from the pit. Oh Lord, my God. Oh boy. How can I breathe? H, that's a good question. You think there maybe there's oxygen in the in the belly of the whales or or the big fish or something? Maybe just filled with water. Maybe. Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. I mean, well, blue whales have big things that they suck up water in. Yeah. I don't know. It might be just with a bunch of parasites. Yeah. I don't know. Do you want to read verse seven? Seven. When my soul faded, fainted fainted with me, I remember the Lord and my prayer went up to you into the holy temple. into your holy temple. Yeah. Those who regard worthless idols forsake their mercy. But I will sacrifice to you with a voice of thanksgiving. I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of Yhovah. So Yhovah spoke to the fish and it the it vomited just like Jonah. Oh yeah. This morning our Judah vomited. That was it that was a big that was a big boy peaked up too on to how much it would be I don't know and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. All right. So u so what's what's going on in this section? What's it about? Jonah praying and God delivers him. Okay. Praying that God delivers him. Okay. And it happens. Yeah. Well, it's interesting like this is a giant prayer song type thing. Uh, and he's he's crying out to the Lord. I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction and he answered me. The question is that some people have asked like, is he saying this after he's already been vomited up or before he's been vomited up? Right. Is this something he wrote later or is this something he was writing when he was in the belly of the fish? I think he could have wrote in it because there's no people. Yeah. So, most likely Yeah. Well, it could be him remembering what he said, like writing it later, but remembered what he said, right? Because he then he says um that God's heard his voice, right? And he's he's saying that like he was as good as dead or dead. Shiel is like the place of the dead, but he was almost covered in water. Yeah. Covered in water down to the to the roots of the mountains. Head covered in seaweed. And I don't know how he breathed. Yeah. What I'm wondering. I know it's a thing that you're wondering. It's a it no matter what, it's a miracle. I would love to be able to breathe forever and just go under water and swim. Well, let's I could just arm wrestle a shark. Yeah, I arm wrestle a shark. The point being, buddy, is no matter what, this a miracle, right? God throws him into the ocean or they he has the the sailors throw him into the ocean and it's a miracle. Everything gets calm right away. God calls the great fish and it comes and it swallows him up. How it keeps him alive, I don't know. He's as good as dead. Some people think he actually did die in there. Oh, but then when he was vomited back up, somehow he came back to life. That must have been some miracle of vomit. Some miracle of vomit. Yeah. So they say like when it says uh so the Lord spoke to the fish and it vomited Jonah onto the dry land like all of a sudden he revived the vomit might have been kind of a miracleish vomit was miracle. I think all of this is is miraculous. It was miracle vomit. So what would you say this section is about? You got to put it in your own words. Yeah. The miracle of the vomit. The miracle of the vomit. Uh I would say Jonah's song uh psalm song when he stopped running from God because remember he had gone down to the ship of Tars of Tarsus. He went to Japa and he tried to get as far away from Jerusalem as he could go and now he's and now he's coming back to the Lord. Well, he's in the sea in the depths of the ocean but he can still breathe. I don't know how. Yeah, I know. You can I can too. just go under the pool and get all the wings. Yeah. Well, the point being, what do you think is the best verse to summarize this section? If you could underline one verse in your Bible there, what what verse would you underline? I think one of verse 10. Okay. Yeah. Um I think for me, I would probably say verse six or seven would be what I would say. But um let's go ahead and talk about Calling. So what's this call us to do? And where does this point us to Jesus Christ? I think it's points us to Jesus Christ because he he saved Jonah even though Jonah disobeyed him. Oh, okay. So God saves even a sinner prophet like Jonah. Yeah. Do you want to know what Jesus says about Jonah? What he says? No sign will be given you except for the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was in the belly of the fish for 3 days, so also the Son of Man will be in the in the he'll be buried in 3 days and come back to life. Then Jonah might have been dead. That's what some people say. Like maybe maybe he actually was dead. But point being, right, Jonah is a picture, a type of what's going to show us Christ. Maybe I'm still thinking of the physics. He would have probably have gotten crushed from the pressure. A miracle, dude. That That's a definition of a miracle. The pressure from the water should have crushed him. It's like five buses stacking on top of it. Yeah. Well, let me ask you the question. How does he come back to life after getting vomited out by the fish? Miracle vomit. Like it say miracle vomit. How did Jesus come back to life after 3 days? I don't know. Maybe no miracle vomit there. It's the miracle nails. The Well, the nails are gone. Maybe miracle feet. Maybe it's the miracle God. So, hey, you ready to pray? Yeah. Okay. Father, thank you so much for this day. Thank you for time to spend with each other. Thank you that you are a miraculous God. You are not bound to the laws of nature because you created the heavens and the earth. You created that great fish that swallowed up Jonah. And you are the one who created us. And you're able to bring us both to death, bury us, and go to shield, but you also are the one who can bring us to life. Lord, we thank you that there's a picture for us that the resurrection is our true hope and that you indeed are gracious even to sinners like Jonah and us. In Jesus's name, amen.
